Larry,

Rob is referring to the multifunction tool -- named the GMC tool by Gene -- on sale with coupon for $19.98. Here is a link to the HF flyer page.

http://www.harborfreight.com/retail-flyer

I already have the GMC tool but hope to buy another. I do not know how limited the quantities may be.

Another option, Costco is selling a better made version, think it was
about $100

Not cheap like the Harbor Freight one, but not the $300
German brand (Fein)

I have the Fein MultiTool. Too expensive but really good.

By the way, if Santa needs to find something to buy you
Fein makes some amazing tools. Check Google.

Even the Fein itself is on Black Friday sale -- $175 or so IIRC.

Buzkin,

You raise an interesting point.

Is it worth spending 5 times the amount for the Costco tool?

Question 1) How many GMCers have the HF cheap Chinese version (CCV)?

Question 2) How many GMCers have had the CCV fail?

Question 3) How many GMCers have had he CCV fail and gotten a new one FOC?

Question 4) How many GMCers have had he CCV fail and had to buy a new one?

Personally I like the one powered by air! It doesn't get hot when used for a
long time.

Basically let me tell you, as a guy who's burned through tons of cheap. Tools, if it says Made in China, I refer to it as a disposable power tool. Good for a few projects then u pitch it and get some thing else. Tools like the kind produced by Fein (fine) literally live up to their name. Sure they cost more but will probably outlast you. Just depends on how heavy the usage will be. Obviously a tradesman is better served with a quality brand, but for the weekend warrior the cheap stuf can vet it done as well. That said I'd like some fein and snap-on tools for Christmas Smile

save that extra $320 you saved by buying the HF version, and put in a

AHHHH...yes. I have the "Dremel" version, and it is one of the handiest tool in my garage. Also bought the Dremel version for a daughter that is rebuilding a house. It gets almost continuous use.

I personally used it on my GMC to remove the spray-on insulation in the walls. Used it to remove a 3" wide path down the right or left side of a cavity, then a wrecking bar to just scrape/pop out the old stuff. Took maybe 5 minutes to do the entrance door.

Netters;
The up side for the Fine Tool, its guarantee for life.
If you send them in for a free check up ever six months.
Fine pays for the shipping back you pay for the shipping out.
This is the tool you would want if you where making your living with your
tools.
My brother owns a boat yard here in San Diego and he switched over to Fine
tools some years ago.
His guys would destroy the H F tools in less then a month.
As for me and the hobbyist the H F tool is just fine.

Looks like a coupon might be necessary. I'm driving 50 or so miles to my handy HF and don't want to come home empty handed. Suppose the coupon will be available at the store? Every tme I go to the web to download this coupon the tool is listed at $34.95. Thanks

Stick,

I was in the Pensacola HF last week and the flyer with that price was
available at the checkout counter. I don't think a coupon was included.
The price in the store at that time was $29.95.

It appears that the special includes only one or two accessories, not the
entire array usually offered.

Fein sells these in various kits, and the price depends a lot on the kit.
With Fein, the bits and blades are also quite expensive, but they are
durable.

I bought a Fein Multitool before the patent lapsed and others started to
make competing versions. I probably would have gotten a cheaper one had they
been available, but I don't regret what I spent on this one. Whatever the
brand, these tools are essential for GMC rebuilding--no other tool will get
where these will get and deal with whatever comes up the way these will.

I bought the HF took a year ago and have just used it to cut the horse stall padding to put in between the frame and body. Had almost continuous use for two days and had no heat problems or any other kind.

I've had my HF GMC tool for about 2 years now and am very happy with it. I use it several time a month for work and it has just started to give me problems. I use HF tools to test whether I really need the tool. When/if I wear it out I then look at how long I've owned it and what the cost of a better tool would cost.

The HF GMC weighs more, vibrates more and is noisyer then better muilti purpose tools such as the top of the line Fein but for the average DIY motorhome owner, it is a good buy.

Being that I use the tool professionally and will not loan out my tools, I will be replacing it after the first of the year with a better MPT. I'm hoping Santa will will bring me a Fein for Christmas.

This is an interesting blog on HF tools.

G'day,

When I was down at the COOP I was a regular at the local Harbor Freight
store in Orlando. It's less than a mile from Jim B's shop. I took a
pneumatic riveter back that had gone TU for Jim. The manager exchanged it
happily and then told me something interesting. She noted that I should keep
the receipt for the new riveter as the warranty started over for another 90
days!

I was surprised by this as I always thought the warranty started the day you
bought the ORIGINAL item and if it was replaced the warranty on the new item
was the date you bought the ORIGINAL item.

She re-iterated that the HF policy was that the warranty started over.

Netters;
Happy Thanksgiving

Saw this online and thought it may be useful...

I decided to try their much-hyped Multifunction Tool after reading many great reviews on it. I was going to get the basic model (the red one) for $39.99 but then I saw the variable speed model (the grey one that comes with a case) was marked down to $49.99, so I opted with that.

By the way, here’s a hint — I saw lots of guys with 20% off coupons in line. I only had a 15% off coupon, so I was determined to get one of those 20% off ones! I noticed that the cashier just stuffed the old ones into a plastic jar. The jar was so full of coupons, they were falling out.

I walked over to another deserted register and saw that there was a jar full of the coupons. It was in easy reach (I doubt they care anyways) so I scored one and got back in line.

Anyways, this Multifunction Tool was a steal at $42.00 (with coupon, including tax). It buzzed right through the 1/2″ plywood I was making a cutout for an electrical outlet. I was impressed. I think I’ll end up using it regularly for my home improvement projects and I think it will be good for a few years. I didn’t bother with the $10 extra for a 2-year warranty — I don’t use my tools enough to warrant it I think.

If you want one of these, now is the time with that 20% off coupon!
