While winterizing my '74 Canyonlands, I discovered this cannister in the water heater compartment. It's connected to a duct that runs behind the water heater and has a very slight airflow when the furnace is on. Is this a stock unit? Is there supposed to be a heat source in the bathroom? Thanks for any help.

Strange. Looks like a PO mod of some sort, jury-rigged to extract and redirect heat.

Jess,
It appears that the PO has tried to get heat into the area under neath
the sink. Many of the coach models had an aux. blower to push furnace
heated air to the bath. It was located on the other side and ran when
the furnace ran. It did work well either. Most have been removed.
If there no wires then this looks like some metal duct work on the end
of the hose.

Looks like a PO mod. All the standard side bath coaches I have worked on
have a hose running from the heater down the drivers side and across the
back.
It looks like the PO extended this hose into the bath cabinet. Normal bath
heat on a side bath unit comes from the heater to behind the drawer module
on the drivers side, up the wall, across the ceiling and down the back wall
of
the bath to an outlet about 4 feet above the toilet. This line was only
about
1 1/2 inch in diameter and had a booster fan in line behind the drawers of
the
drawer module about 4 1/2 feet off the floor. None of this ever worked well.

As I recall I found this same "canister" in our 1974 coach. This is just the GMC method of terminating the bathroom duct and directing the warm air towards the water heater. Ours had no other outlet for the air from this duct, as some have mentioned.

This duct was cut off in our coach when the back end was converted from a dinette/bed to a full bed, so I removed all this stuff from the bathroom cabinet when I changed out the water heater.

Our '74 has the same canister, too. Looks like they came this way.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Now the question is, leave it alone or take it out. As long as it doesn't rattle, I'll keep it. But just one rattle and...it's outta here!
Thanks again

I have not heard any noise from mine. I turned it a little, so the opening is toward the bathroom. I would say, at best, a tiny bit of warm air whiffs out of it. It is not going to drive you out with heat, that is for sure.
