Ok, my 403 is now rebuilt and it will be awhile before it is back in the
coach,
what spark plugs do you recommend for a carbed engine w / a comp cam??
I want to keep all the holes plugged and covered while I make a lot on dust
and dirt
working on the chassis.

Here you go:
GM used seven different carbs for the GMC motorhome. 73 and 74 years had a carb #7043254
75 and 76 and early 77 had 7045254 except for California emision carbs which were 7045554
77 coaches with the 403 engine had 17057254 and California 17057559
78 had 17058254 and California 1758559
These carb numbers can be found on the left side of the carb, stamped on the flat surface close to the secondary throttle shaft.
There is also a date code (4 digits) stamped in the same area. 73 to 76 coachs had a number starting with 70
77 & 78 carbs start with 170.
Some parts for these carbs are quite different on the 170 from the 70. DO NOT INTERCHANGE parts between these two series.
One example is the primary metering rods. They are .080" shorter in the 170 series, they had a different taper to the rods and these carbs used different sizes of primary jets.
The rods for the 70 series carbs will be stamped D-50. (7046338) I am told that this was used ONLY in the GMC motorhome carbs. The 170 series are different. All GMC carbs used the same secondary metering rods. These will be stamped with a CJ. The primary jets for the GMC at your elevation should be .070". (7031970)
The proper power spring for the GMC is #7036019 which has an operating range from 4" to 8" of vacuum.
One problem that some people have had is the use of gaskets from an unknown kit. There are changes in the air passages in the carbs and it is easy to install a gasket that covers an air passage hole and that will make the carb perform improperly.
The Delco overhaul kit for the 73-74 is 7046812. For the 75-76 (non Calif) it is 17051886

Why not simply install your new plugs where they
will eventually reside (using a non-corrode on the
threads), put old sparkplug caps on them to keep
dirt and moisture off them, and hook them back up
when ready to go?

Hi Larry, I spoke to Dave Paterson a few days ago, as I had purchased one of his LS distributors for my '73. He said that the mfg. of the #7 has changed and he does not prefer them anymore. My friend in CC runs a NGK XR45858 in his boat 455. I put them in mine and it runs very well. Dave says that's OK and to gap them at .037.

I was considering replaceing my plugs next season...anyone know anything of these new E3 spark plugs?? A little expensive but are suppose to produce a better burn.

The E3 plug has been accused of using snake oil to get some of the
figures that they claim on their website. First of all I am not
knocking the E3 plug, but I never believe the manufactures claims on
items like this. Their has been numerous independent tests using
the E3 plug with differing results and you can find them online. All
in all IMHO the E3 plug is maybe marginally better than most plugs
that we use in our MH today. It is somewhat more expensive than most
plugs with a price range of $6.99 to $4.99. Jegs carry the plugs for
$5.99. Looked at E3's online cross-reference list and it appears
that we would use the E3.52 plug or our motors. Again MHO is that
your might get improved mileage and more power, but will it be enough
to offset the increased cost of the plugs over there lifespan? The
choice is yours.

Many years ago, my father in law who was a graduate of Adcocks Diesel School
in Portland, Or. (Both are long since deceased), was reading a J.C. Whitney
catalog and saw all those claims for improved horsepower and fuel mileage
improvement offered within their grand and illustrated publication. On a
whim, he fired off an order for everything that would make such a claim,
reasoning that he should have to stop his car every so often to remove the
excess gasoline from the tank. Needless to say that didn't prove out to be
much of a problem, but it sure made some interesting looks when he raised
the hood on his car to display all that stuff to his friends & family. As I
recall, he became somewhat more skeptical of advertisement claims after
that. I still get amused when thinking back to those times. Live & learn &
enjoy the journey. Life is a trip with a great view if we stop now and then
to enjoy it. Have a great Sunday out there and hug your family and polish a
little dust off that GMC.

I generally run on the principal that if an item or device is as effective as claimed then the OEM's would be buying it or incorporating it into their product. With the pressure on corporate MPG I believe anything that could get a MPG increase, that would be truly noticeable to the consumer, is being used or has been incorporated.
Thus, for me, the real question is, "What OEM is installing E3 spark plugs?" If one was, I'm sure E3 would have made it known in their advertising.

I am seriously considering finding a cross over # for Split Fires. They have a forked electrode that throws 2 sparks at the same time. I know that my Hot Rod Harley really likes them. I can tell a difference in the starting, idle and acceleration. It hits a harder lick and starts on the first roll over.
