As I am re-assembling my transmission (Thank you Manny), I am going to put in the vent elbow to a catch bottle.

Can (of course) someone provide experience as to where to aim the vent and locate the catch bottle?

Thanks

Matt

Mine is directed to the driver's side and all the way down to the frame. At that point the fluid goes on the ground. The exhaust pipe is on the passenger side so any exhausted fluid is 6 or 7 feet away from it. I did not see much sense in adding a bottle. If you have a major leak the bottle would just fill up and end up on the ground anyway.

Matt,

I just ran the tube over to the drivers side and attached it to the frame in
the wheel well. I did not use a catch can, however, I think the catch can
(clear bottle) would be a good idea as you can monitor if the trans vent is
spewing fluid out! I would locate it somewhere it's easy to see as you do a
walk around inspection.

Matt,

I did the same thing as Ken and Rob; ran a rubber line to the outside of the frame on the driver's side, zip tied to whatever was handy.

For the first year plus and maybe 5 - 6000 miles the end of the tube never got wet at all. Then I started towing a 3000 lb Tracker and I started to notice evidence of some spewage after pulling some long grades in second gear. The fluid level in the trans has remained OK. so I'm sure it was minimal.

I ran the tube over to right behind the LF wheel with intention of just spilling overflow on the pavement. BUT...on the last trip, the overflow coated the side of the coach...MY NEW PAINT JOB...so I put in a clear plastic catch bottle so I can monitor how much is coming out without putting AFT on the paint. Until now I've always just figured that leaks or overflow just coated the undercarriage...a sort of ongoing rust inhibitor. I've taken a different view since the new paint.

Matt,

A simple sheet metal angle pop riveted to the top of a pill bottle and
self-trapping screwed to the left rear of the #3 (transmission) cross member
is what I use. The catch bottle won't hold much before overflowing, but
after a couple of years, it contains <1/4" of fluid, telling me what I want
to know.

Once the level stabilizes, you won't need to worry about catching anything.
I just ran mine over to the L side frame rail and pointed it down. No
mess,no fuss.

Steve is right. ....unless you are showing trans fluid all over the case and frame, once you have it stablized you should be good. I had a worn O ring that was leaking and as luck would have it Chuck Boyd had given me a spare. Once a installed that O ring I have had no leaks and my trans fluid level hasn't changed. Oh, and I had Jim Bounds install the vent 90* fitting that points down to the ground so I don't have to worry anymore about my headers catching the trans fluid on fire.

I'll be driving Miss ANNIE to her new home in Florida this Friday, so Mr. Murphy now knows that I'll be on the road.

Just what I did. ....your mileage may vary.....

Chuck,

I'm kind of on a tight schedule. My daughter flew up from Florida yesterday and together we went thru the house deciding what I want, what she would like, what her cousins would like and what goes to Good Will or the dump. Anyway she has to be back to work Monday morning and since she has never traveled in the GMC, Iam driving her home to Mount Dora, Fl. Hope to be there either late Saturday early Sunday.

I was thinking of doing that thermostat for the water heater while we are at Bean Station this spring if you are game.

I made my reservations with LazyDaz for January, so hope to see you then (Mr. Prez and First Lady). Wink
