We got home about an hour ago from a ~100 mile round trip to Benson, AZ for the November GMCSJ (Saguaro Jetrset) rally.
For the first time in 28 months and over 8000 miles of GMC ownership, My coach shut down and coasted to the side of the road. We had just entered I-10 and had reached about 65 mph when the engine suddenly shut down. I coasted to a safe place and removed the engine hatch cover. I removed the air cleaner cover and checked for gas, Plenty of gas squirting out of the accelerator pumps. Next, took the distributor cap off, everything looked normal in there. I put the cap back on and pulled one of the plug wires, had Kathy look for a spark while I cranked on it, no spark.
Fortunately, when I replaced the distributor with a Dick Patterson unit almost two years ago, I kept parts from the old one. I fished the old module out from under my seat, replaced the Springfield Ignition module, and was back on the road in i5 minutes. I hitched a ride into Sierra Vista with Nancy Ferguson and picked up a new one at O'Rielly and put that one in.
Part two of this story is that the second one of my Kumho tires failed in 8 months. They are PO installed 225/75R-16 LR-E, Kumho "Road Venture HT" tires. The date code on the tires is 1206, making them less than 5 years old. The other tire failed in April. Both tires developed a bubble in the tread but, to their credit, did not come apart. I no longer trust these tires and will replace the remaining four. This started, both times, as a vibration in the rear of the coach. The first failure was the right center and the second was the left rear.

Oh, I thought I better clarify a few things: All the bad stuff happened on the way to the rally. I changed the tire and installed the new ignition module at the rally on Friday, had a great time there and an uneventful trip home

Sorry to hear of your difficulties but glad you overcame them quickly.
I am particularly interested in your tire failure as I have the exact same
tires on my GMC (as does Ken Burton).
Mine are only three years old but from this point forward I will check them
more regularly.

Rob,
I have always been careful of inflation and run the tires at 60 - 65 psi. II had the coach weighed at Pueblo and the four rears weighed in at ~2,000 lbs a-piece. According to the charts I have seen, that is 5 - 10 psi more than required for the weight. When the first tire failed (right center), I thought it might have been from some kind of previous curb impact or other damage inflicted by the PO. I was worried about the rest of them after that, but they performed flawlessly for the next two trips, one of about 400 miles, in July, and the other of about 1,800 miles in October. After the second tire failure, I just don't trust them any more.
The coach is stored outside and the tires are not covered, but one was n the sun almost constantly while the other was on the North side of the coach, largely shaded. There were virtually no sidewall cracks.
I hope you and Ken B have better luck with the Kumhos than I did, but I will be going back to my old standard, the BFG Commercial T/A.

I cannot find a current satisfaction report on Carl's brand and model of Kumho tires. He stated that they were Road Venture HT's. I do not find that model listed, so I am assuming that they are no longer available. I do find an APT listed.
I did find some reports on them from 2004 through 2006 and people were very happy with the HT's at the time.
Anyway, They are indeed a different model than ours are.

IIRC the Kumho tires that Marcel had problems with were also a HT type tire
and it too is no longer available.

Rob and Ken,
I read, with interest, the previous posts on Kumho tires. None of the current models that Rob referred to, match the ones on my coach. So it would appear that you are right and the Road Venture HTs are a discontinued model. Maybe they have made improvements to the newer model tires. These tires were close to ageing out anyway, but I had hoped to get another year or two out of them.
Again, The tread did not completely separate from the casing, it just came loose and formed a bubble (in the tread, not the sidewall)creating an extreme out of round condition. In both cases I drove them about thirty to fifty miles like this and didn't have a blow out. Just got lucky I guess.

Sure wish Y'All would make up your minds about Kumho's. My Firestones are
now 5 years old and 4 of 6 badly need replacement. I'll be ready to buy
after the 300 more miles home. The Goodrich Commercial T/A's have been
quoted at $153 each in Americus. Haven't checked the Kumho prices but
expect <$125. I wouldn't mind saving the difference but not if I'm gonna
blow a Kumho.

Ken,
The tires that Marcel and Carl had problems with were NOT Kumho Road Venture
225/75R-16 AT tires they were HT!
Having said that mine are only two years old and have only 12,000 miles on
them.

The best thing you'll like about the Kumhos is the traction. No more problems on wet grass and wet leaves.
I have known people that blew Firestone, Goodrich, and Michelin tires. So far no one has said they blew a Kumho KL78. I blew a BF Goodrich on the way to Quartsite last year. I have never seen a tire split all the way around from one edge of the wheel to the other edge before. It was completely demolished. I ended up replacing all of them with more BF Goodrich tires. I'm sure if there were enough Kumhos out there someone would blow one of them. I found a bubble / blister in the tread this summer on one of my Michelin airplane tires. I bought a new one of the same brand and model to replace it.
Here are my three choices:
Cheap and very good on - off road traction - Kumho
Medium price and good highway tire - B.F.Goodrich radial TA
Expensive and well proven - Michelin.

PS - I have Nexen tires on The Blue Streak Downunder and they have a tread
pattern very similar to the Kumho's.

Thanks. I'll check prices on the Kumho's when I get home. The tire store I
usually use can get them and generally treat me right. But I suspect Gene's
right: For not much difference, I'll buy USA.

They are AC plugs gapped at .040. The module is a Springfield Ignition that was installed in the distributor when I got it. I have no idea why the module suddenly failed after giving almost two years of satisfactory service. I intend to send the module to Dick Patterson but haven't had a chance yet.
