I was wondering if anyone has advise as to how to completely remove and
re-seal around the windows and the seams.

I know when it rains our Edgemont is leaking but I cannot figure out from
where so only can think of to do the whole
coach.

I have never done it, seen it done, etc.

Not even sure which type of sealant to use, or how to get the old stuff off
without scratching the paint.

Buy, beg, borrow, steal or download the GMC Service Bulletin
file X0021.pdf (38Mb) from:

http://www.bdub.net/manuals/X0021/index.html

Just about everything you need to know is in there. Several
bulletins on leaks and sealing. One bulletin has a
troubleshooting chart that guides you where to look for and
fix leaks depending on where you see water coming in.

Big job. The GMC is not like ROTM stick and staple RVs.

You really...really need to learn as much as you can about
the problem before attempting resealing. I repeat: The GMC
is not like other RVs in this respect.

Good luck.

I think the best (and only) way to reseal the windows is to remove them from the coach, scrape away the old sealant (some lacquer thinner or adhesive remover may help soften it), and reinstall the windows using 3M butyl sealer (comes in a roll for installing windows at auto parts stores. Never use silicone sealer!

This should nicely seal the windows, but they are certainly not the only place that will leak on the motorhome. The upper roof strips (especially at the endcaps) are a common source of leaks as well. Folks often advocate pressurizing the inside of the coach with a big fan, and using soap bubbles to try to see where the leaks are coming from - they may be a long way from where they are dripping into the interior.

Do your reading of the service bullitins, and be patient. It takes time and patience to trace and repair leaks.

Enjoy your project in good health!

G'day,

I had Jim B's guys reseal the windows on Double Trouble this year. Their
process is:

1) scrape out any sealant that is just inside and under the edge of the
window frame
2) run blue masking tape around the window a tiny bit outside the edge of
the window frame
3) CAREFULLY apply a thin bead of black RTV under the window frame and up to
the tape
4) use a wet finger to smooth the bead out and make it look uniform around
the whole window
5) pull the tape off as soon as the bead has been smoothed before the RTV
can set

Sealed them up and looks great!

Regards,

One thing to check in the short term is that the window drains in the lower channels are not clogged with dirt. These need cleaning quite often.
