I am considering replacing the 33 year old Power Inverter In My '78 Eleganza II
with Two Of These Modified Sine Wave Inverters From Harbor Freight ~

One will be wired for the Furnace and 2 Roof ACs and everything else will be hooked up to the other one

Watts is watts. Amps is amps. Voltage is voltage.

Don't plan to run AC units. If you had four batteries hooked in then you
could run a hair dryer or a microwave for a brief period. Lights, yes. AC
units, no.

I am afraid I agree. We have a Solectria Electric Car. The heater "core" is a ceramic, running on 132 (nominal) volts from 11 Deka batteries. These batteries look like my deep cell for the motorhome but when you start to pick one up you think it is nailed down. The electric heater is wimpy at best in CA weather. (52 tonight coming home from choir practice) It barely kept up. In the 7 freeway miles to town the heater alone bumps the amp/hrs used from 8 to 9+. The motor to run the dash air compressor uses about the same.

In other words, the heat or air adds about 12 percent to the power used to drive a 2300 lbs GEO Metro 62 mph. Batteries weigh in at close to 700 lbs. I am guessing that all 11 would run the GMC roof air for about 40 to 50 minutes before pulling them so low you damage the batteries.

New Coleman rated at 15 amp hrs at 120 volts. (This does not count starting the thing.)
Deka Batteries are 95 amp hrs.
Depth of Discharge = 20% for long life (2000 cycles if you are lucky)
20% of 95 = 19 amp hrs.
Inverter inefficiency must be figured in
The Solectria takes 6+ hrs @ 15 amps at 120 volts to charge

(The next pack will be lithium phosphate 90 amp/hr. 400 lbs lighter and Depth of Discharge = 70% giving around 60 amp/hrs. This would run the unit three times longer. Price... $5,500.)

Joe,

That 33 year old "inverter" is, if original, a converter that charges your batteries from shore power and the generator. It also provides 12 volt power for lighting, etc. when using shore power or the generator. If you want to replace the original converter with an inverter, get an inverter charger. Or get a modern converter/charger and a separate inverter.

Yes, You will probably draw around 180 amps or so at 2000 watts.

You also might want to get a small trailer to haul all the extra storage batteries around in.

I was thinking of using 10 Golf Cart Batteries and 4 Solar Panels
But am now leaning toward replacing the 6kw Onan Green Barbarian
with the Generac 5.5 KW RV Quietpac ~

What do you think about the Caspro 55amp Power Source

"33 year old Power Inverter" ???? Someone installed an INVERTER in the late '70's? (Yes, I do know they DID have inverters available back then... )

Are you sure you do not have INVERTER (12v dc to 120v ac) confused with a CONVERTER (120v ac to 12v dc)? In 1978 they installed BUZZ BOX converters in our GMC's from the factory.

As others have noted, it isn't very effective to run Air Conditioners from battery power.

This is a timely subject for me as I am looking into installing an inverter in my coach too. I have measured the loads (with a "Kill-a-Watt") of the items I want to run off of it, 19" flat screen/DVD combo, DVR/Sat. receiver, laptop, netbook, etc. and they only total up to a little less than 200 watts. I have discussed this with a few good friends, but thought I'd throw it out for a group discussion.

My intention is to install an 800 watt inverter in the electrical cabinet which is close to my rear mounted house batteries. I will use maybe one size larger cable than the recommendation for the length of run. Then I will run two separate lines (i intend to use 12g extension cords plugged in to the inverter) up front and mount a duplex outlet in each of the front seat bases.

Any and all suggestions on brand and/or source for the inverter would be most welcome.

As a P.S. The Saguaro Jetset is having a rally at Cochise Terrace RV Resort in Benson AZ this weekend, hosted by Steve and Nancy Ferguson. Anyone in the area is welcome to stop by any time or if anybody in the Phoenix area wants to make the trip down, we would love to see you.

(Yes, I do know they DID have inverters available back then... )

like than would be enough to run a whole block of houses. I really do not
understand the opposition to the Onan plant. They sit there and run at 1800
Rpm for 2500 hours with little or no maintenence, and when you compare them
to Generac, or Kippor, or Coleman or most any other unit, they measure up
very well and do not sit there and scream at 3600 RPM and vibrate the
fillings out of your teeth. Just my opinion.

I suspect he meant a 5.5kw.

You're right though. The 1800 rpm Onan is the way to go. They will outlast a 3600 rpm generator about 5 to 1. 5000 hrs minimum life.
