A flex plate fatique failure is maybe not common, but not unknown either. It is
usually caused by built-in misalignment between the engine and transmission
causing the flex plate to, well, flex. I'd be willing to bet that yours was
cracked before and then during storage the exposed crack surfaces corroded,
leading to an almost-immediate failure when you drove it again. The steel is a
high-carbon heat-treated steel, so it will rust readily where it is not
protected (like within the crack).

? My friends 86 Chev. Van 20 did the exact same thing. Was also a 305.

As I recall, on 305 & 400 Small block equipped vehicles that included
suburbans, pick ups, and Full size blazer/Jimmy vehicles also equipped with
TH350 & TH400 automatic transmissions, that was a frequent enough failure
that a dealership service bulletin was issued but I don't remember a recall
order which often times originates from Auto transportation safety institute
(atsi)
