Okay, now for something entirely different -

Here are links to two eco-conscious vehicles for the
eco-conscientious:

http://www.urbee.net

Both are projected to be in the $20k price range. Both are
built with frames of welded tubing. Milner has a fiberglass
body, the Urbee displayed a cutaway prototype with ABS
composite body panels. That possibly because the body panels
were created directly out of a 3D protoyping printer linked
to the CAD software of the company in the booth right next door.

Milner says the car is imagined to be a "kit car" although
the end purchaser gets a finished vehicle. The kit will be
available only to a network of builders who will assemble
and final finish the car.

Urbee is not quite ready for prime time. Still in
prototyping stages. It has some interesting design elements
such as rear-wheel steering. When I first saw it, I
mentioned to the booth folks that it looked surprisingly
like the Tri-Magnum (http://www.rqriley.com/tri-mag.html)
from some years back that used the VW front axle and a
Kawasaki 900 frame and drive train. They'd heard of that,
but never seen one.

Milner has about the same interior space as a Camry. Glass
instrument panel, and Thunder Sky lithium-iron-phosphate
batteries. Folks at the booth said (and spec sheets show)
100 mile range, 60-ish mph.

There you go...

Oh yeah - Alex Debogorski, one of the Ice Road Truckers was
there. Got to shake hands and chat with him a bit. Nice guy
and just like you see him on the show.

Those are both pretty nifty. I hadn't seen either of those.

I bought the original Tri-Magnum plans years ago (still in
the file cabinet). As intriguing as it was, and still is, I
decided then that a project of that magnitude is best
planned out to the last detail. Once started, it needs to be
taken to its conclusion.

I saw one for sale near me in Chino some years back. It
obviously had been started with good intentions, but the
builder ran out of money/interest/patience somewhere along
the line. It was drivable, but a long way from "finished".

For someone with space, time, tools, technique,
understanding spouse, and all that, one of those cars would
be a satisfying project. Probably get some looks, too.

the great thing is that they are registered as a motorcycle which means you can get insurance (hopefully). if i get tired of building steam engines i would really consider it.

Just back from short trip to England. Noticed in newspaper that Morgan is going to re-introduce their classic three wheeler. It will use a Harley-Davidson V-Twin for the engine and a modern transmission. Since it will be considered a motorcycle, you will need a motorcycle license. However, up here (Northern Virginia) that gets you into the HOV lanes.
A classic towd for a classic motorhome.

Too bad it's going to use a Harley engine.
There are so many engines that would be better.

But I guess if you want a noisy, low performance, expensive and inefficient engine, it's a good choice.

Geez Keith, they worked fine in 1907 when H-D borrowed them from a tractor.
They are american made, Milwaukee Iron & all of that tradition. It is the
sound of the uneven firing v-twin that sells them. When you want form over
substance, they are the only way to go. Worked on lots of them, never had a
hankerin' to own one. Kinda like a boat. Made a lot of money during my life
working on them, but never owned one of them either. Guess I'll just have to
be content with my 1957 BMW R-60/2 that has never been apart except to put
in a clutch disc, and my GMC which has, many times.

They must be doing something right. Every peice of Jap scrap trash around is trying to imitate not only the look, but the sound. But, as usual, there's nothing like the original. You don't see too many chick's tattooing "Honda Goldwing" on their body. Wonder why?

G'day,

William S. Harley designed a single cylinder engine that would fit in a
bicycle frame when he was 21 in 1901. In 1903 William S. Harley and Arthur
Davidson offered the first Harley-Davidson to the public. The first V-Twin
Harley was introduced 1909 and designed by the factory and based on the
single. Two cylinders were mounted to a crankcase at a 45 degree angle. That
model wasn't successful and was removed from the lineup in 1910 BUT it
re-appeared in 1911 with a number of improvements and the rest is history!

The last three engine types (Evolution, Twin Cam, and Revolution) are not
stereotypical Harley engines. They ARE reliable and they DON'T leak oil.
They produce enough power for any sane individual to motivate down the road
at respectable speeds. In fact the Revolution was developed in collaboration
with Porsche. It is 69 cubic inches and produces 115 hp. Harley's are not
noisy when they leave the factory; well at least the EPA and DOT don't think
they are.

At the end of the day Harley-Davidson motorcycle engines are designed to
follow the tradition started with the first V-Twin back in 1909. A 45 degree
V is far from optimum! Furthermore it should be noted that HD builds what
their customers want, last time I checked that's a good idea especially if
you want to have a successful business! ;-)

PS - I looked at the Morgan copies and the ones with the water cooled
engines did not look anything like the original. The one with the Moto Guzzi
looked OK but the one with the HD looked the best and it wasn't even a
chrome out version.

No more information, just a big blank space and a lot of advertising
along the side.

the blurb I read a quite a while back made it sound like it was already
approved.

The "odd" sound of the Harley 45 degree V-twin engine is a
result of the fact that there is only ONE throw on the
engine's crankshaft. One connecting rod is "normal" with
one bearing surface. The other is a two-tined "pickle fork"
that straddles the "normal" con rod on the crankshaft throw.

Firing of the cylinders occurs on alternate revolutions of
the crankshaft. Therefore, in two revolutions which contain
720 degrees, the firing is separated by alternating intervals
of 315 degrees and 405 degrees. Some folks say it sounds like
"potato-potato" but I have never been able to understand why
that is.

Both I and my wife (both septugenarians) ride Harleys! They
certainly have enough power to propel us down the road at
speeds in excess of which we like to ride.

As Rob said, they are not objectionably loud with stock
mufflers and they certainly don't leak oil or any other fluids.
They have great torque for their displacement and provide for
operation and power at far lower RPM than the typical crotch
rocket type of bike.

The "Revolution" motor is only used on the Harley V-Rod series
of Harleys and is not like "normal" Harleys in layout, cooling,
style, transmission, etc. They also operate at higher RPM than
the older air-cooled Harleys and have very different transmissions.
