Hi Gary, the 49ers January rally was rescheduled to Feb.11 - 14th; it's a
Mexico Ship's Cruise hosted by the Travao's. Eloise and I annually go to
Quartzsite mid January and have been camping at the same place as the 49er
Rally last year. I wouldn't be surprised to see other GMCers there. The
length of stay depends on the local weather; we have camped there for two
days and we have camped there for three weeks. For the last two years
around the 22nd we have joined the Pacific Cruisers for their unofficial
Rice Ranch Rally. The Rally host, Chuck Garton blew his motor recently but
if he isn't ready by then someone else will probably step up. The Rally is
on the Pacific Cruisers website but the date is pending. We will be going
on to Yuma afterwards. We look forward to seeing you and other GMCers in
Quartzsite.
Kirk

Did Chuck replace the engine Jime K was sending him then have a major break down a little bit down the road? I was woundering how that worked out? Even master mechanics like Chuck can have lousy luck sometimes.

That is a real heart breaker my heart goes out to Chuck. On one hand I might want to give up and say I've had it and on the other I'd be determined to figure out what the hell happened. I know what my wife Paula would say.

Believe me I know what it feels like to wipe out a motor. I over reved mine on my way to Quartzite 2 years ago (spun #8 rod bearing) the only good thing about that sinking feeling was the tow truck towed me to my RV garage (about 35 miles). I got to spend the winter removing and rebuilding the motor at home.

There are times we take it in the shorts.
What bothers me is the hardship we put on Chuck and Doris since our
engine did not perform.
There is always a possibility that the relief valve did not function.
Many times, that is the last thing people check.
We are sending down another fresh engine to him no charge and will see
how much labor we will pay Chuck for the R&R.
I know any other no GMC shop would be putting blame on some one.
We are structured to be able to meet these problem head on and are
going to do all we can to take care of this.

Jim,
Please comment here on the post mortem findings. I just can't figure out
how 150 psi of oil pressure, 300 deg oil temps, and a blocked bypass go
together.

I know Chuck from when we were in the Pacific Cruisers. He is no new comer to Olds and Cadillac engines in his Gmc's . Besides loosing his GMC to a fire he has had his share of engine mishaps. He has also put a lot of miles on his Gmc's. It's just a real bummer when something bad happens a long way from home.

Steve,
There might be something that ties down to the previous engine doing
the same when the first mishap happened.
Chuck indicated that when he was climbing in CO, the oil temp went
around 360 degrees, but the coolant temp remained ok.
The shop that installed our engine for him just used the trans cleaner
that comes in a aerosol can like the one we use on transmission cooler
flush.
I will keep you informed as this is a strange one.
Chuck and Doris are such decent people, I will do all I can to assist them.
I contacted Gary Cook to us to locate a carrier to haul the coach back
to their house, as they wanted to get home . They had been on the road
for around 6 weeks or more.
Chuck was telling me that the hauler was going over 83mph at times and
never stopped to sleep.

Jim
When I spun a bearing in my motor in 2008. I pulled the aluminum radiator out to flush the cooler. I used a can of gas and a carter electric pump with an old style glass fuel filter.
I ran that pump 4-5 hours a day for the better part of a week forward flush back flush turned the radiator every which way and blew it out with an air compressor several times till nothing was going into the filter then another day to be sure. I even changed the oil filter after the first 1/2 hour breaking in then again in 800 miles and cut them open too be sure paranoid yes but piece of mind is worth something.
