Has anybody added a drain to the steel transmission pan?

Does anybody have good advice as to location?

I think I would really like to do this before I get the parts put it back up.

Thanks

Matt

Matt,

I added a drain and a temp sensor. I'm parked at a RV camp across the street
from where I store Double Trouble and it is raining so I can't crawl under
it and take pictures. I'll do so as soon as I can.

BTW locating the drain is a bit tricky as there is a lot of "stuff" up
inside that you don't want to hit with a magnetic drain plug or the temp
sensor.

We installed one at the Indiana work rally last week. It is an interesting design with a little more capacity than the Ragusa.

If I were buying a new one, I do not know which one I would choose.

Jim had a couple of the Rockwell pans with him at the Las Vegas rally. I lusted after one, but decided to wait a while before buying one. They have a somewhat larger capacity than the Ragusa due to the design and the fact that they are slightly deeper. Nice looking units.

Ok,

I'll bite. Does the Rockwell pan have tapped ports for both a drain plug
and temp sensor? Any idea of how much more capacity? More is better - yes?

If the Rockwell pan is deeper than the Ragusa pan, would't that increase the risk of damage due to the pan hanging lower than the crossmember? I seem to recall a discussion last year that mentioned this risk with the Ragusa pan.

I really have no opinion on the comparison between the two pans.

Answers to you questions:
It has holes for a sensor and drain plug.

I have no idea how much more fluid it holds.

More is better. I guess so especially if you are an oil company selling the fluid.

I'm guessing the increased surface should provide a little additional cooling surface. How much I can not guess.

I can tell you it is heavy chunk of aluminum.

You really need to call Jim K. if you want information in it.

Answers to your questions.

Yes, it has holes for the sensor and drain plug.

I have no idea on how much more capacity.

More is better? Possibly, especially if you are an oil company selling trans fluid.

It does provide more cooling surface for increased cooling but how much more I can not answer.

You really need to call Jim K. with your questions. He has or had them in stock.

Ken,

Thanks. Adding a drain plug, an interior magnet and sensor are the key
things here - the drain plug being a nice option as it is not that hard to
drop a transmission pan and avoid the mess if you do it carefully. Securing
a magnet in an aluminum pan could be a challenge. Years ago I learned the
magnet trick. The mechanic that ran my uncle's taxi cab garage was doing it
in the sixties and I was amazed at all the stuff it collected. He used
about a 1"x1/4" magnet set in the corner of the pan. Of course, the steel
pan was perfect for holding the magnet.

Thanks Again,

To attach a magnet to my transmission plug, I used a high strength magnet out of a hard drive, and stuck it to the drain plug. Works well and you get the junk still attached to the plug when you pull it. Nothing added to the interior of the transmission pan. I do have the Ragusa al pan, and like the additional fluid capability.
Since I drive a very un-improved mountain road twice a year, I would hesitate to have a pan with a lower profile.

You can buy those round magnets at Sears Hardware and probably most other hardware stores. I have them on my trans plug, the bottom on my final drive cover, and the bottom of my oil filter.

They are only a couple of dollars. I have never lost one driving down the road.

I had a bung welded into my pan for $20. The Ragusa pan is nice, but pricey for what it is.

Matt,

Here you go!

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=36689

Forgot to mention in the photo that I filed a slot across two of the flats
on the nut heli-arc'd inside the pan so it would drain all the fluid.

Does anybody have good advice as to location?

I think I would really like to do this before I get the parts put it back

Thanks
