What gauge fusible links are used on our coaches? I'm not near my coach so I have no way to check unless the parts manual tells us. As a precautionary measure I would like to replace mine with new. I've easily found 12ga & smaller locally, but I have feeling that our coaches use atleast one link of a heavier gauge. Am I correct?

Les,
About the 5th call out in the left margin of the chassis wiring diagrams is
"Fusible Link"; to the right of there in the diagram is the location and
identification of the fusible link: 16 g.

If anybody wants some for a spare (when it goes you are stopped dead) I bought a 10ft roll of 16g. Send me a private email and I can throw a foot in an envelope for you. I plan on keeping some for myself as a spare but I hope I never have to use 10ft of it.

I am not certain but I thought that I had noticed several fusible links on my coach, all looking like factory installed items at the ends of the multiple wires that connect to the isolator. I also believe that I saw one at the starter, but since it has been several months since I pulled my chassis from under the body, CRS may apply!

I don't think so.

Wayne,
I'd appreciate it if you could toss enough of the fusible link wire for my
two Avions's and John's Eleganza in an envelope and send it to:

Please let me know what it cost you so I can make a contribution.

I had a look at my GMC today and can't find a fusible link anywhere. The PO had rearranged the wiring somewhat resulting in a major mess that I plan to tidy up.
I now wonder where I got the idea that my coach had several fusible links? Damned CRS or CRAFT !!

The only one I found on the wiring diagram is shown here coming of the vehicle battery positive post on the firewall. It is the one at the 3 O'Clock position. It is about 9 to 10 inches long and terminates at the horn relay. This is the one that disabled my coach until I figured it out.

My fuse box has seen better days and has been cobbled together by the PO. I am thinking of finding a modern fuse box at the mens mall and seeing if I can change it over. I am also thinking about using fusible cartridges and separating the circuits. Kinda scary that everything for the coach goes through that one fusible link. Have a short in the horn and puff, no ignition, lights etc. I think it is time to upgrade to more modern electronics.

Wayne,
I'm thinking of doing a similar upgrade when I tackle the wiring. Keep us updated on what you decide to do.

Bob, it may look good, but that was a BAD move. Someday,
your fuse will blow and live
you stranded by the side of the road. One of the main
reasons for fusible links is that
they are slow-blow devices. They can take an over current
condition for a longer amount
of time than a fuse can. There are temporary, transient
conditions that can cause current
flow in excess of your 40A fuse. A fusible link will allow
short term over current conditions,
a fuse will blow.
In low current (usually less than 5 A) there are special
slo-blo fuses made, unfortunately
they do not exist in higher current fuses.
I have know several GMC owners who did what you have done,
only to have the fuse blow,
They have all gone back to a fusible link.

nah
they are a direct short any way, so if you get enough current to blow a
piece of wire, all hell is going on and everything will blow any way ;>)
