Hello:

I was looking thru the previous pages here the other day and noticed that someone had posted a Comparison of Towed Vehicles at some point.

I didn't look at it then, thinking I could find it easily "the next time."

But I've looked, and searched, and I cannot find this topic.

Can anyone point me in the right direction (preferably not the door!) Razz

Thanks very much!

Doug

(Still looking for my coach)

Doug,
Exactly what information are you looking for regarding tow vehicles?

Steven:

To make a long story short, my wife and I are thinking of a Smart Car to tow behind our (future) GMC.

But reading some of the reports on the Smart car got me to thinking of other small(er) vehicles that could be towed.

Our specific requirement is a small vehicle that can be towed 4 wheels down AND have an automatic transmission. (or some form of auto-manual, like the Smart Fortwo).

I'm okay with a manual, but my wife isn't.

I'm also thinking that a 2-seater towd might be a little small over the long haul.

So I hope this helps!

Thanks!

Doug

No new one's unfortunitly, but Saturns are a really good choice. My wifes SL2 gets FORTY mpg. And thats the twin cam motor. If we drive it to KC and back (450) at 70-72 mph it drops to a just terrible 35-37. Havn't found any thing except the Festiva (50mpg, and that would make the best towed vehicle, 4 person seating and almost nothing is lighter) thats better. Some times you can find a SL1 or SL2 that already has a tow bar attached.,,,,Good luck,,,PL

Thanks....just did a bit more looking around and found Motorhome.com which has listings by year of towable vehicles, including weights.

Think this might answer my questions.

Doug,

Yes, the Smart Car can be towed and there are several GMC'er that have
Smart Cars. Very light car but not a whole lot of room inside. I
have towed Geo (2dr 4wd rag top) and a Chevy Tracker (4dr 4wd) since
1999. Latest towed is a Honda FIT which is also an auto trans car,
towed 4 wheels down and weights in at about 2500# which make it one of
the lightest newer cars available. http://automobiles.honda.com/
fit/ If you are a FMCA member you can download the latest listing of
available towed vehicles. Although GMC'er tow many different
vehicles, lighter is always better.

Pete Watker (in the UK) towed an older Smart behind his
coach for several years.

Ramco supplies a pump that allows you to tow 4 on the ground for
majority of the cars and vans.
You'll want to outfit your coach with aux. trans cooler and lower gear ratio.
When that time comes we can give you a quote on the base plate, tow
bar, brakes.light adapters, to bar, hitch. We feel were qualified to
advise and never insulted when you find a better price and purchase
elsewhere.
I have been towing with our coach since 1988 and have installed and
sold towing equipment to 50 people.

Rob M:

Link is http://www.motorhomemagazine.com/.

Scroll down right side to Dinghy Guides - they are PDF files listed by year including weights, whether auto tranny can be towed 4 down, etc. Very helpful.

Jim K: Thanks! I know GMC suggested 1000 lbs was max towing weight way back when, and I know a lot of owners tow larger vehicles, but I would prefer to tow as light as possible (when we get our coach).

Thanks to everyone for valuable info and advice - very much appreciated!
