With the discussion on the house wiring and mention of fuse blocks -- what is the appropriate replacement for the old fuse panel?
Is the Blue Sea brand good?

I have used Blue Sea fuse panels in a number of power upgrades on boats. I have never had quality issues. The prices are quite variable. Shop the web for what ever model you choose.
(Hint: Buy the 12 circuit with ground and you will not regret it. )

OK - I'll bite. Why one with a ground vs one without? I can't think of a reason why a fuse block with ground is needed on a GMC. What am I not aware of?

First off, it is only a few dollars more. (That will not be a big part of the end cost of the project and may save that much in working time.)
Though a GMC has much more access to a ground than a fiber glass hull, when you add anything, you need both. When you have to run power to the new item, it is just as easy to run a pair as a single conductor. When they get to the new location, you are done with pulling wire.
If you are installing something in the ends of the coach, or in the wooden parts of the interior, it can be a problem to get to a good ground unless you brought it with you the first time.
And, if/when thing get strange having solid DC there makes things much easier to diagnose.
My coach is a 23' '73. The original panel is still where it was installed. The new panel is behind the glove compartment and it supplies: the new stereo, The CB, the cell phone repeater, 2 additional 12V mouseholes and something else that I have forgotten what is. I have plans for more. Always buy as much capacity as you can manage.

Rob,
Thanks for the option.. My existing fuse block is fine -- but I have on hand a PD to replace my original buzz box (which also operates fine) and thought I should consider a complete redo of the house power supply and distribution,
The only additional power load I have planned is a macerator.

am not overly proud of this solution to the fuse block issue, but It did work
ut quite well and was very inexpensive. If you have just one bad one, it will
ork too.

When I installed my PD, I also replaced the old fuse box with a 12 fuse panel, and installed it in a more convenient location (so I didn't have to get down to see the fuses). It's an easy conversion to do at the same time as the PD install, and gives you additional outlets if you need them in the future. I've already installed some additional 12 volt outlets, and have room for more circuits if I want them. I also got one that has the grounds as well, so it's easy to get a good ground connection for anything you may need.
I bought the panel from Waytek Wire, but they are available from a variety of sources.

Dennis,
I've used the 12 position with ground Blue Sea System one that you show. Seems like it was only about $35 when I got it from West Marine a couple of years ago, so they have apparently gotten quite a lot prouder of them. (West Marine is convenient, but not the cheapest date in town lately). Didn't search the web a lot, but Amazon has it for $46 w/ free shipping, so a little better.

I just finally got it put in this summer, and I thought it was well built. One little hang up was the stock GMC terminal ends are too wide to fit between the terminal blocks, so you get to put new terminal ends on. I still have to stuff more wires in it when I do my headliner, but here's some facebook pictures to see how nice it can look installed . . .(don't need to be a member to see.)

George,
Thank you -- I like the idea of locating it at a more convenient access height.

There is a problem with that fuse block - Only 6 circuits.
The original block has 8...
It also has no ground buss and no provision to store spare fuses.
I like the other better. My opinion only.
Matt

The original is the one behind the glovebox, right? Those fuses still remain and this block supplements that. If the fuse block is fed by the PD unit which is grounded, why do you need a ground buss?
Spare fuses? Yeah, I'm real familiar with spare fuses! Lucky the camp stores seem to carry a few.

I bought a "lot" of this style off of ebay fairly cheap. I think it was 2 14 fuse, 2 10 fuse and about 4 6 fuse units. All for something like $20. As it was a few years ago, I am fairly sure I have used most of them by now.
This style works ok for motorhomes (maybe not for boats) but they could be made a little better.

Are we talking house power or automotive power? For my house system I installed a PD 4590 all in one pannel, has pleanty of room for expansion. And the panel fit in the stock location once I devized a mounting frame for it. Works great, and is a 90amp smartcharger/converter so have pleanty of juice to charge the house battery and feed all electric accessories...
