Sounds similar to the one I posted a couple of days back but cheaper than Lowe's.

I am curious, would this kind of generator be able to run the roof air conditioner??

Yes and no. A 10K btu roof air will draw about 12 amps so the 2000 watt (18 amps) generator will start it and run but it's a bandaid solution.

The cheaper generators run at 3600RPMs. They are not really made for continuous operation.

A proper RV genset is much beefier and runs at 1800 RPMS, and is designed to do so for a very long time.

Notice, the cheaper generators rarely have hours counters attached.

If i had a really limited budget (and I usually do) I'd look for a salvage generator from an RV before I'd mess with a budget generator.

On the other hand, with a 2 year warranty, you could just keep wearing it out and bringing it back.

NO.

It MIGHT start a 13,500 btu A/C, but probably not, and certainly not
repeatedly over a very long lifetime. The alternator/inverter units are
much less tolerant of start-up loads than are conventional generators. And
a continuous load like an A/C will soon overheat the inverter -- especially
since it will only be run when it's hot weather.

Even the 3600W Generac Rick Denney has, and the one I HAD, don't like A/C
very much.

Ken,

Spot on Mate! Not that you need MY concurrence! ;-)

While I was down and Jim B.'s shop this past summer I tried to help him
figger our why the inverter generator he installed in the Air Stream motor
home to run the roof air would only run for an hour or two and then quit. We
thought it was heat related and added a four inch bilge blower to try and
keep the compartment in which it was located a bit cooler but that wasn't
it. At the end of the day IT NEVER WORKED PROPERLY! It kept dying after
running an hour or two. He wound up getting a Generac (not the 3600 like
yours) and installing it, FIXED.

He installed the inverter generator to try and save the customer some money
and wound up eating it. As Jim says "no good dead goes unpunished!"

Rob M.

I sometimes carry my little Honda EU2000i, heavy but quiet.

When we go as a group I have 2 or 3 coaches run extention
cords and we all have juice without a loud Onan running.

Just have to time usage so the heavy current needs
(microwave, hair dryer, etc) are used one at a time.

This arrangement gives all of us power for our needs
and still keeps fairly low noise.

As stated too small for air conditioning.

Also, there are kits for running the Honda (and others)
from propane.

Here is a helpful write up on the basics of what you
need in a small generator.

What Dave said about the low priced generators is true, they are not designed
for long period use.  The small motors get really hot over time running and
simply are not designed for our application.  You know me, I just can;t resist
so I picked up a 3000 watt low priced unit for under $1000.  Had electic start
actually with a wireless remote!  Had a 30 amp outlet plug on it's front and
sure looked like it would do the trick.

I adapted it into a coach, fed 12 volts DC and fuel via an electric fuel pump
sporting a regulator from the coach systems.  plumbed the exhause and rigged up
a positive air flow over the motor to try and deal with the heat issues.  The
set up worked and for a time I thought we had done a good thing-- then the
reality of use set in.  The unit simply was not reliable!  A "Jesus clip" came
off the governor and the thing would not adjust for current loads.  It got hot--
I mean really hot.  I was scared it would spontaniously combust!  Bottom line
was I pulled the unit, replaced it with a Generac RV generator that cost $2000
(twice the cost of the rig) but twice what was needed to have a reliable
generator in a coach.

It was an expensive test but one I had to try.  There will be of course levels
of successes using this idea.  Some installs may work as intended as long as the
intentions are realistic but in the end, the units are not designed for this
application thus there will be a short coming of something when you try this.

It's so hard to resist when a descent RV generator starts costing at $2000 when
you see those units at Costco for $500 thay say 6000 watt and all those really
good specs-- sorry but they just do not work on our application-- it just does
not!

For now, the Generac 50G RV designed generator is about the best buy for the $.
They work well, fit right into our compartments.  There are some unique wiring
options, the Generac has 2 seperate outputs that cannot be combined so wiring it
into our coach takes some rewiring of the primary circuits.  Also, there is a 6
wire remote harness where our ole Onans used 4 but hey all that can be
overcome.  I can hardly hear me recommending a Generac but for the bucks, the
50G is a good deal.  When you purchase it, you need to also get the remote
installation kit which has the remote and complete muffler kit

Good luck,

Jim Bounds

I watched Miguel install one of these Generacs and fire up both roof airs on it. If I ever need to replace my Onan, I will get one of these. Under 2 grand with muffler, best I recall.

thanks for the info guys. I've wrestled with the money I spent on the Onan to get it running reliable I hope. Turned out to be more money on it than I wanted to spend. Put a new board in it and had all the seals replaced in it. It had less than 300 hrs on it but alot of year sitting I'd imagine. Anyhow it makes me feel a little better about it.
