Sure looks like a 49-50 Merc too me. That is a rare car I can't remember the last time I saw a Merc woody of that vintage and it is pristine.

I believe that it is a mixture of 49-50-51 pieces with the lions share being
1950. It has aftermarket sunvisor, foglamps, fenderskirts and some very
extensive reshaping of the bumpers. I am not sure of the pass side rearview
mirror either. That being said, The Oldsmobile/Cadillac air cleaner housing
looks right at home in there. It is a really well done car and lots of $ was
invested, particularly in the wood parts. IIRC the stock hubcaps had mercury
logos in them too. My wife Mary would probably trade me and our GMC for it,
it is her all time favorite car. Very nicely done project.

Dennis;
I'd have to agree with James the parking lights on a 49 are smaller and round. Very likely there is an olds or Cadillac engine under that air cleaner as that was common in the day. Although guys are fitting that air cleaner to Chevy's too. I'm guilty of not keeping my old fords stock too as they just resemble their old self.

The 51 Merc had a rectangular parking light instead of the bullet. The grill
is different than the 50 model in the link you posted. I don't recall what
was different about the front trim on the 49. To me, the Mercs looked more
similar than the Fords of the same generation.

Swap out the year (1949 or 1950) in
this URL to see more pics. The 1951
page shows pics of stock front ends
PLUS a 1950 woody and a green 1951
woody.
The 1950s had simple park/turn lights
at the front. 1950 brought chrome
trim around them, and 1951 brought
a wrap-around treatment. Similar
treatment was done on 49-50 Fords.

Pretty sure it is a 50, I had a 49 Coupe and it had the same OEM skirts and Visor. The Bumper with the upper wing and the large Bezel around the parking lights make it a 50, in 51 the rear fenders were extended and a Continental kit added as a option, the grille changed to wrap around the fenders and included the parking lights, the car behind the yellow one is a 51.
Just what I remember, had a 49 and a 51.

Sorry Dennis, I believe that the car that Dan took a picture of is a 49 Merc
if the hubcaps are stock, they still used the small dome shaped ones that
snapped over spring clips on the wheels, the 50 and later used a flatter
shaped cover that snapped over a raised stamped place on the wheel. That is
also about the time that they went from 16" to 15" wheels. Not an exact
science because the wheels and tires are easily swapped between years and
cars. I do know that the differentials in the Merc Station Wagons and
Woodies were a larger ring gear and heavier axles but still had the 5 x 5.5
lug bolt pattern. We always tried to get station wagon rear ends to replace
the ones in our shoe box fords when doing engine swaps. They were a lot
stronger. The 49 Merc engine block was the one to get to repower earlier
fords too. The bell housing was a separate piece instead of being cast on
the back of the block like the ford. The merc transmission was a different
piece than the fords used also. This probably accounts for the fact that
these merc wagons are a rare car today, because so many of them were used up
for donors. I know I am guilty of junking 3 or 4 of them.

Jim,
I think you are correct. Enlarging the photo and comparing it I see that the turn signals appear to be the round style and the chrome strip different than a 1950. The bumper over-riders influenced me to first think 50.
Here is a 1949 I found for comparison.

Now, how you could tell about the differential from that photo is beyond me :
Thanks to everyone for their help in the ID.

Anyone able to help ID an old woody station wagon? The photo is intended for publication and the author is trying to confirm the model. I believe it is a 1950 Mercury but would appreciate any input. I can email the photo direct (tried unsuccessfully to post on the photo site)
