all this talk of modifications like 3 1/2 exhaust, EBl, Diesel, etc.
I thought:
time to send this again:
Last weekend I talked to a new GMC owner. He said he drove his new
(to him) 12,000 pound, stock GMC home and got almost 10 miles per
gallon. "Excellent !" I told him. I love my GMC.
Trying to lower the cost of driving his GMC with the high cost of gas,
and trying to get the 17 to 18 MPG of new trucks, he said:
Tire pressure
He runs 80 lb of tire pressure to reduce the rolling drag, how much
will that improve his MPG? I said you will get 8 to 10 MPG depending
upon if you tow a Toad or not.
3" Exhaust
What if I invest $2,000 in headers, 3" exhaust, single rear low back
pressure exhaust system? I said you will get 8 to 10 MPG depending
upon if you tow a Toad or not.
Reduced weight
What if I throw out the 400 lb Onan, save 200 lb with Al rims, and get
rid of the particle board, get rid of the propane tank and stove, go
all electric with 200 lb of solar panels and spare sets of batteries ?
I said you will get 8 to 10 MPG depending upon if you tow a Toad or
not.
Electronic Fuel Injection
What if I put in a $1500 TBI or a $5000 Multi port injection system.
I said you will get 8 to 10 MPG depending upon if you tow a Toad or
not.
Engine Upgrade
What if I spend $20,000 for a 454 or 8.1 modern engine replacement
with factory mpi, and computer. I said you will get 8 to 10 MPG
depending upon if you tow a Toad or not.
Diesel
What if I invest $15,000 in a diesel conversion to burn diesel that
cost 10% more than premium gas? I said you will get 8 to 10 MPG
depending upon if you tow a Toad or not.
Propane
What if I spend $5,000 or so for a propane conversion, with 200 pound
tanks, hoses, controls, and hard to find fuel that (so far) costs 10%
less than gas. I said you will get 8 to 10 MPG depending upon if you
tow a Toad or not.
Other alternatives
Things got sort of quiet, and feeling I was just a grumpy old man ( I
love my GMC), I wondered over to another conversation about another
camper with a huge Country ----- motor home. He was having trouble
with this beauty, it was determined his inverter was not working. Not
so bad I guess that happens. Then it was said the replacement
inverter will cost $6,000. WOW, I could buy a second GMC for that
sort of money!
I thought to my self, I wonder if he gets 8 to 10 MPG depending upon
if he tows a Toad or not ?
I came home to work on my new headliner, and furnace install. I
thought " I wonder if I get 8 to 10 MPG depending upon if I tow a
Toad or not".
I never check my MPG any more, I just don't want to break down on the
road. I guess every one has their own agendas ;>)
Have a happy Turkey Day Everyone
