Just got my baby back from shop
We installed a new refurbished steering box, and boy does she steer nice, My shoulders got so sore after 200 miles I would have to stop.
She is a real dream to drive now, not having to correct all the time

Marcel,
Glad to hear your GMC is easier to drive.
Now how about some details?
What shop did the work?
Where did they get the steering box?
Was it a standard or close ratio?
How much did it cost? Parts / Labor?
The reason I ask is because someone may run into steering problems over in
El Paso and the above info would help them get it fixed.

I'm not near El Paso but I would like that Info also.
I've been complaining about my steering for a long time. Harder than it should be to turn and I constantly correct(and over steer) to stay between the lane lines.
Have replaced all steering and suspension components except the idler arm, tie rod ends and the steering box. All the replaced parts were worn out so it wasn't money wasted but I'm still not happy with my steering. If I knew a new box would solve my complaint I'd replace it tomorrow.

I bought the new steering box from rock auto parts. A.S.A.P. auto did the
replacement in El Paso. the box before return of core was right at 125.00
plus freight. The labor was about 225.00 to replace unit. We will be
changing out the steering box on Gary's coach in next couple of weeks. She
used to wear out my shoulders not any more.
Jim bounds gave me the part number for it and if I am not mistaken it also
can be bought from NAPA
Best change I made

Thanks for the details, however, I hate to tell you this but I removed and
replaced the steering box on Double Trouble and it took me just about 30
minutes to:
1) remove the drag link from the pitman arm
2) remove the four bolts that attach the steering box to the frame
3) remove the steering box from under the coach and put it on a bench
4) remove the pitman arm from the steering box with a puller
5) install the pitman arm on the new steering box
6) install the four bolts that attach the steering box to the frame
7) install the drag link into the pitman arm
If the $225 for labor included an alignment it was reasonable, if not you
paid $450 per hour!

all day, maybe more.
We are thinking about arranging work rally. Do you have interest in a
'all expenses paid' trip out to California?
We have a great indoor shop and my wife is an excellent cook!

Surely you jest regarding this job taking you all day!
I'd love to come to CA, unfortunately I'm tied up getting the Caddy 500 and
two awnings packed for shipment Downunder; getting the VW Beetle up and
ready to use as a towd for next year's tour; and finishing a few little jobs
on Double Trouble and prepping it for winter storage.
BTW I just noticed I left out two steps which were removing and installing
the lines on the steering box.
I must admit I was at Tom Hamptons shop when I did it and he had all the
correct tools and showed me exactly what / how to do it.
Still ain't rocket science.
