And sensitive subject.

The wonderful thing about the internet, especially as we realize it on
GMCNet, is the broad and immediate availability of information. That
affords us unprecedented access to parts sources and prices.

It can also put us into uncomfortable positions: Most of us here agree that
we should, and want to support our dedicated GMC suppliers. In that way we
help to ensure that they'll be there when we need them. It's also an
appropriate way to show our appreciation for their contributions to our
community, such as JimK's always-generous donations to GMCMI, etc. Some of
us even have a vested interest in those vendors since they buy products from
us for resale, such as my electric wiper kits and adjustable ride height
links.

On the other hand, one of the reasons for our love of GMCNet is that it
allows us to share our findings of information, such as bargain prices, with
others -- in return for their sharing. In good conscience, we should not
with hold public knowledge to protect the narrow interests of others.

With that apology, as it might be considered, to our vendors, here's a link
you should visit if you're considering a new brake booster for your GMC:

http://www.carolinaclassictrucks.com/PB11504RV.html

(I paid $225+S&H for one within the past month.)

The booster is actually on my shopping list, and was going to order this week...

I've seen many previous threads on the board about the need to support the GMC specific vendors, and I know the benefit of ordering from our vendors as the parts are tested and known to fit. Honestly, I agree with all points on supporting those that make our projects possible.
That said, trying to restore a coach, and keep the budget in check make options like this hard to ignore.

I feel like I am painting a target on myself by asking, but does anyone know how this part would compare to the proven sensitized boosters that are out there? Is this basically the same part?

I'll be calling the company during business hours, and will post any new information I am able to get.

Does anyone have a picture of the front side of the sensitized brake
booster that is being sold? I looked at the one that is being sold by
Applied GMC, but it just shows the back side. Thanks.

Ken,

I agree with your sentiments and have purchased a lot from our vendors but good deals are hard to pass up, and that is one of the values of the GMCnet. I talked with the folks at Carolina Truck. This booster is made in the USA to the original specs. The listing is slightly misleading as it infers they are Delco but are "Delco Style".

They have also just posted today a brass proportional valve at a good price: < http://www.carolinaclassictrucks.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CCTI&Product_Code=73-78-GMC-MotorHome-prop-valve&Category_Cod e=>

What am I missing? I checked Applied GMC's site and they have a sensitized brake booster for $220, $5 less that the site you referenced!

Not Ken, but this site has the booster for $132.88. I think Ken was making the point he paid much more from somewhere else and was just passing this good deal on to the rest of us.

The price in the referenced ad is: $132.88 plus shipping and handling.

Kens remark: (I paid $225+S&H for one within the past month.) was saying he bought one somewhere else. Most likely a GMC vendor.

I am waiting for someone to report on buying and installing one from this source before committing. (You know the old saying "If it seems to be to good to be true...") This is one of the upgrades required to get the wife to be able to drive the coach.

I am doing this right now, I purchased mine threw Jim K, $220.00 but
it was my understanding that i would receive a $100 refund when i sent
my core back. ( i might have misunderstood).
My GMC is a 75. i had to cut a small access whole to get to the bolts.
the top passenger side bolt is still very difficult to access. today i
am going to purchase a flex head wrench. this should allow access to
the bolt from my air leveler controls. if that does not work i will
have to enlarge my access hole.
I should receive the booster tomorrow, hope to have it in soon after.
I will give a report as soon as i complete

David,

Any chance you could get some photos
of those mounting bolts.
Any of any holes you need to cut?

Thanks

Jim's appears to be a "sensitized" booster while the part mentioned indicates it has an "enhanced reaction disc" emphasis is mine.

Does anyone know if that is same thing as being "sensitized". Sensitive type's want to know. Smile

To be fair it should be pointed out to people that Jim K. has been super with people regarding guaranteeing defective or returned parts here on the list and what happens if these parts are defective? More than likely 30 days down the road it's too bad but you have to pay a second time.

I followed arch's write up, I was able to remove the nuts without
cutting a large access panel in the front. I did remove a small area
1x2 at the most on the side. but that should be coveredup by the lower
dash panel. I am not sure how hard it will be to reinstall the nuts...
when the part comes i will let you know. I will take some pics and see
if i can add any useful info.
however, mine is a 75 so my leveler valves are right there. if your
GMC has the levelers on the side. i wont be much help.

You can get it done without cutting. It is not fun and probably adds 1/2 to the project. I did mine without cutting. You probably will need a wobble socket or wobble extension and a ratcheting box end.

I installed one on the '75 without cutting the dash. I undid all the screws along the bottom
where it attaches to the firewall in order to pull the dash out about 1.5", and wedged
a block under there to hold it out. Might be able to do it without this step, but it gives more room
and allows you to get at it some from below. I also pulled out the air suspension face plate
and the glovebox and worked through those openings. Biggest problem I had was the new
booster has slightly larger bolts than the old one, so it was hard to get it through the original holes.
Had I known, I'd have enlarged the firewall bolt holes a little after taking the old booster off.

And sensitive subject.

I was wondering if anyone has successfully installed one of these boosters from Carolina Classic Trucks?

I am currently working with Carolina Classic Trucks and the manufacturer (MBM) to resolve a problem I'm having and they are wanting to know if any of the several who have recently purchased this booster have had the same problem. I find that the pedal push rod is about 1/2 inch shorter than the original and brings my brake pedal down too low -- almost to the floor when pressing the pedal (not enough safety margin for me).

Carolina Classic and MBM have been most responsive and want to make sure this problem is resolved so if anyone can provide feedback it will be most appreciated.

We purchased several units to try.
We measured one and returned all.
Whoever it was that said it works was not too knowledgeable for our application.
It was probably made in Red China by a cook,

just installed a booster from jim B last sunday. It fit perfect. was about 1/2 hour job. but i had my dash apart already.

I used craftsman rachet wrenches. and a good magnet grabber tool to get the washers and nuts started. I pulled out the bottum of the dash about an inch, and blocked it with a chunk of wood to get the drivers side lower nut. the passenger side lower nut was accessed through the level switches hole. 1/4 turn at a time with open end of wrench at crazy angle. slow but doable.

have not finished my brake work, so have not tested the performance. but It fit right.
