To: Roger Black et al.
Our trusted friend Duncan the Dog passed away unexpectedly in his sleep last
night at age 12. Always standing by sleeping on the warm engine cover, he
would promptly take Julies place in the co-pilots chair to take command
every time she stood up to do anything. If the door of the GMC was left
open, you knew where to find him, planning our next mission from his
favorite perch. Seems like he and I both have the same memories of some of
our best times cruising the country in search of something with our happy
family in the rear. I was in search of fun family time or the biggest
trout, he was in search of that perfect tree to mark in the name of Cavalier
King Charles Spaniels everywhere.
Lady, his wife of 10 years will have to carry on the tradition without him.
I was looking for my wire strippers in the coach this morning and she went
straight for the copilots seat.
Both Julie and I lost our fathers in the past year. Three good friends moved
on to a better place. I just hope when Duncan gets there he remembers to
keep off my father-in-laws couch!

Ron,
Well understood here and appreciated. I know I had a good co-pilot in Cody,
a pure-blooded mix. Now we have two English Cockers that vie to take my
place when I stop for gas. When we're away from the GMC they both take up
post and watch for the least bit of movement around the perimeter. The good
thing is you got to make good memories.

The following originally appeared in The Oregonian in 1926 and later was included in the author's book of essays

Ron and Julie,
Sorry to hear for your loss and we feel what you feel. We were pretty
devastated twice in a year a little bit back. One of our dog friends
sent this along...
"Three years a young dog.
Three years a good dog.
Three years an old dog.
...Three years a gift from God."
It must be why we're already programmed to love them so much.
Jim G: We're also Boston Terrier people. We got the coach to go to BT
gatherings. We lost the two we started with, Missy and Radar the year
before our daughter arrived. When Radar was dimming after Missy went,
we rescued Bexley and he kept Radar going for as long as he could. He's
our co-pilot and Zoe's best buddy now. It's too bad that Missy and
Radar didn't get to try out the GMC, they would have loved it. I'll
admit I get a little misty thinking about how much.
Once I left the GMC in the parking lot and ran in to get something.
Bexley got out the door somehow and I started looking around for him
outside (its a high-traffic area and that's nerve wracking to me.) I
should have known that he ran straight for the coach and jumped up in
the right seat. It must be all that glass, dogs love it almost more
than we do.

Some of you know I write a newspaper column. About 8 months ago my old Bichon Abbey was bitten by something. We'll never know what it was, but she survived. I wrote a column about that near loss and of the agonizing days that followed. She's old and blind and deaf and her quality of life is really not that good. Everyone tells me "you'll know when it is time." I'm not so sure about that.
I will tell you that on the one trip we've taken in the new old GMC Abbey and Zippy (our flea-market Chihuahua) were right there riding on the poorly insulated engine hatch. They've never behaved better in a vehicle.
At the end of the day my old 6'6" frame slept in the world's shortest twin bed with both little dogs.
I never slept better in my life.
My sincerest sympathy on the loss of your little friend.

Very sorry to hear of your loss. A few months back I lost my wonderful
Yellow Lab after 12 years. She was my trusted and loved companion. Since
moving to the Memphis area 8 years ago, I have made the drive back to New
Jersey to visit with my children other family and friends at least twice
each year. My Lab, Holly road the co pilot seat every trip. I am heading
back next week. It is the first trip I am taking without her. It will not
be easy - especially when I hit the rest stops and have no one to walk with.

Thank you for that tribute by Jimmy Stewart. I recall seeing it many years ago when I stayed up that late. It brought back a flood of memories of our 12yo "puppy" that we lost last Feb.
