After driving about 100 miles I stopped at a traffic light and was watching the tach. It suddenly dipped and the engine died. It restarted immediately. I drove to the next light and just in case it was going to happen again, I shifted to neutral. Suddenly, the tach dipped and I was quick enough to step on the accelerator enough that it didn't die. I drove through another 10 miles of traffic and it didn't happen again. I don't think it was vapor lock because there wasn't anyother problem. I checked the vaccuum connections and they were tight. I also checked the spark plug wires and all seemed tight.
Any ideas as to what might have caused the problem and what to do to fix it?
Thanks for your suggestions,
Tom

Did the tach just dip to a lower reading, or go to 0? If it went to 0, I would suspect a component in the ignition system is trying to die. Jim Bounds had a recent failure where a component in the ignition system became intermittant and then left him stranded. I think carrying a few spare ignition parts is probably good insurance. Of course, you can count that it won't be one of them that fails on your coach, but you may be able to help someone else out. Good karma has a way of rewarding.
Good luck tracing the problem.

Tom, a '73 had points and condenser and no module. If no conversion was made to HEI, then it is a simple points, condenser, and coil. On those systems the points are the weakest link. Generally, a significant decline in performance occurs before total ignition failure due to bad points. I would recommend carrying a spare set of points and condenser. Or better yet, converting to an HEI distributor.
