"Well, today is the day. The GMC either starts and runs well or tomorrow will be get the pick-up tuned up. I am tired of missing "conventions" (why can't we call it a "rally").

Also trying to install a Kanomata(aka large) in line fuel filter to assist with keeping the ethanol caused junk out of the Paterson carburator. Have one hole drilled so far and the parts on hand.

Why is it everyone else just seems to get in their GMC and travel to these events and I am always behind the power curve?

Some hints: use steel wool #0000 on chrome but not on stainless steel or aluminum. Use Scotch Brite to clean the INSIDE of Alcoa wheels but not the outside.

I use 2x6 boards cut to length to lean across the engine bay. I can turn them "=" this way or "11" that way across the opening.

Use anti-seize compound on bolts into aluminum, but I also use it on bolts for the exhaust manifold, drive axle, heck, just about anything.

Problems with the air compressor not shutting off may be due to leaks in the system. However, mine was due to a faulty(i.e. ancient) control unit. This causes the compressor to come on when the air in the system falls below a specified level and to shut off when it reaches a pre-determined level like 125psi.

I am improving. I only dropped screws, bolts, washers, nuts, tools, an average of 15 times a day while working from above on the engine.
This requires getting out of tne coach and looking underneath. Sometimes they hide on purpose so that I stayed away from working about 10 minutes until I located the hardware. Some are still hiding but I got even 'cause I used another piece. That will learn um, durn um! May leave a trail of hardware from Houston to Du Quion.

I am typing this as we have chiropractic appointments this morning and I can't go to the shop until after that. Otherwise, no time for fun stuff like this.

Well, I have changed everything from the heads up except for the distributor, but changed the inside to electronic, new hi-output coil, Paterson plug wires, new plugs, Paterson carb, alum manifold, "J" heads, new fan belts(cracked after only three years and +/- 6k miles-surprised me so better check yours).

Changed the relay for the A/C fan(dash air). Still no power to the fan for "Hi". Checked the new fan by connecting it to a battery and it seemed to work fine. Can't figure this one out so will have to rely on roof air, dash air on "Med" and use of a 12 volt fan on the floor to make do for thr trip up. Oh, yeah, I changed the switch on the dash control too, twice already with no result.

Am also relying on my 6-7 year old Bridgstone tires. No cracks as they have been covered since new. I have been very pleased with these tires and will replace in kind when necessary(hopefully not now due to strained budget). Yes, I have read the info about how the tires lose whatever over time and heat, hence replace at 6-7 years. Some say 5 years.

Michael,

The hi speed setting for the A/C blower will only come on when the engine is
running - it draws power directly from the alternator.

Rob M.

Michael.

As I understand it, the Hi fan speed only runs when the engine is on -- it is powered by a direct link to the alternator...

Many of us can probalby relate to the dropped tools and parts issue...

As for the fan belts, it seems that rubber bits in the engine compartment have a short life.. Maybe shorter than they used to. The rubber caps I put over unused vacuum ports seem to last about a year before they crack. Hoses, grommets, all types seem to have very short shelf and use life.

Good luck and safe travels to DuQuoin
