This video brings back a lot of memories about those "cracker boxes".
I was a Service Engineer for Duo-Therm during those days, and I got to see a lot of these boxes on my job. I made numerous calls to Winnebago in the early 70's, and I recall a dealer seminar in 1973, when someone brought up the GMC, which had just been introduced. The Winnebago speaker said they were not worried - the GMC was not competing with them, as it was for a different market than what they were selling to. He was right - the Winne was a camper, and the GMC was a deluxe traveling vehicle.
Someone asked "When are you going to make something better looking than the cracker boxes?" The reply: "When people stop buying them"
And they did buy a lot of them - in the summer of 1973 they were cranking out over 600 PER WEEK from Big Bertha, which was the main assembly building for their Class A. At that time the Winnebago was considered to be the best value in motorhomes - well designed floor plans and cabinetry, for the least money invested.
But how many of those are on the road today? Very few - just a small fraction of those that were built in the 70's.
