Good Morning

I installed my new vacuum modulator this AM, WOW, what a difference !!

With the old modulator I'd take off from a stop sign and I'd be in 3rd gear
before I crossed the intersection. Now with the new modulator and Dick
Pattersons Springfield Ignition system, talk about GET UP AND GO !! Like
driving a sports car.......I LOVE IT !!!!!

Oh, and typical of Ray learning all things the hard way.......I never realized
that when you pulled out the vac modulator, tranny oil comes POURING out.......I
was thankful that I had some kitty liter on hand to clean up the driveway !
Another lesson learned!!!!

Thanks for all of your input and help on this.

Ray,
That's great news.
Did you adjust the modulator before you installed it? How?

Hi Dennis

No, I just put it in, it was pre-adjusted.

I did figure out the problem, the one I took out was an adjustable and the
adjustment screw was all the way out, flush with the outside of the tube that
the hose connects to. The new one I installed had the adj screw recessed about
1/8" or so. Not sure how the old one got messed up, but for $9 from Advance
Auto Parts, I'm not too concerned.

The difference just blew me away on how great it performs !

Thanks

So I take it you will not be looking to borrow my spare governor for a test! <grin> Glad to hear you had an easy fix.

You forgot the sometimes posted advise about running the engine for a minute to pump the oil into the torque converter.

Hopefully your experience will set that bit of information into my memory a bit better so I can avoid the bath.

I purchased it at Advance Auto Parts, Part # MD48.

If you purchase it online for in-store pickup, use discount code P20 and you get
20% off. Mine cost me $11.99 including tax.

it is my understanding that if ATF comes out when you remove the modulator you have over filled the tranny. this should be checked after starting the engine to fill the torque converter and then shut off and pull the modulator.

i should add that you let the excess fluid run out, plug it back up and then re-mark your dip stick for the correct level.

Would somebody please tell this newbie the
general location of the modulator is located?

I just ordered via Internet and will head out
shortly to pick up the little beastie. I would
NEVER remember the ordering info if I didn't
do it NOW!

They don't charge you until you pick the part up.

Many thanks to Ray Erspamer for the info and the
discount code.

The price was $10.36 including sales tax.

Oh, yeah - the modulator port is above the oil level - the running level, that
is. Best to run the engine for a minute or two and then change the modulator
within a couple of minutes of shutting it off. Little or no oil will run out.
The torque converter oil will not have had time to drain into the sump. Just
one of the few tricks usually learned the hard way....

Mac,
I will add that your modulator may not look like the brass shiney one in Larry's photo.
You may have a large black bulbous model with a screw in the middle and the vacuum hose entering from the rear side -- that was the original style on some (many?) coaches. It is also the style shown in my workshop manual.
