My passenger side exhaust gasket is leaking between the front two manifold bolts, along the joining seam. I've ordered the RemFlex gaskets from JmK. The question, should I have the manifold smoothed, or allow the Remlex to do it's thing?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Depending on how it may be worn it may seal OK -- but exhaust gas can erode the surface.
Use a straight edge to check -- but having it smoothed is only $25-30 depending on your location.
If it is not too bad you could also put some sandpaper on a known flat surface, ie a table saw top, and sand it down yourself.

I just put them on my GMC. Have not started it yet, but the package said this gasket will fill in the voids and stop leaks. It also said to torque the manifold bolts to 18 ft.lb. which is not much. Further, it states to not bend the gasket. So I put a light coat of hi temp silicone on one side and stuck it to the manifold, allowed it to firm up for a few hours then installed it on the cylinder heads. It is about twice the thickness of a copper gasket which I used before. Also, not cheap....Thx, Michael at GEMRECS

I used these Remflex gaskets a few months ago and they are wonderful. I didn't remove the manifolds from the pipes - just loosened them up (and some accessories on the front of the engine) scraped the surface with my 5-in-1 as best as possible and bolted it all back down. I did replace the bolts with Grade 8's from the hardware store. I've driven about 4,000 miles - no leaks.

I really ought to check the torque again...

i believe they call cor grade 8 bolts so they don't break as easily when you try to remove them. you certainly don't need them for 18 Lb. of torque.

And a good coating of Never Seize couldn't hurt. I've put it on a lot of
bolts that I normally wouldn't have. Lots of moisture and humidity in the
Memphis area.
