I've been working the numbers regarding what the Edgemonte will cost to rehab - not restore - just tidy up and make useable -
knowing it'll be upside down but trying to keep the loss minimal.
As part of this effort I'm looking at what things are bringing...on Ebay and elswhere. I thought this auction was a good one to watch...

I thought the values were split between the actual manufacturers. When I was looking, it was not a price range across the board.
It seemed to me the GMC's had 3 Catagories, the 73-74, the 75-76 and 77-78. Each, for some reason were held to a group and pricing seemed to vary between the groups.
The outside manufacturers, like the ROYALLE pictured, was in a whole class of its own. Probably because they used different building materials, and different methods to build the interior.
This seemed to be another different price class.
I had nievely thought that if you seen one, you have seen them all, but even from the 73-78's, this was totally untrue and the variable prices supported this thought.
Today, its a matter of what you like and the quality you can afford. As the basic frames are more or less the same and most interiors have either been gutted or upgraded to the current owners taste or price the owner can or is willing to afford, the value will be as varied as the quality of the coach allows.
Even a price average between coaches won't be close to actual value, and of course, the value of anything is in the eye of the beholder..............

No 16" aluminum wheels and old tires. But rebuilt engine, awnings on both sides, lots of good things there. A very good buy.
I'm still looking for a 77 or 8, Eii or Kingsley (might consider a PB) that still has the rear dinette and the bunk/couch. If anyone knows of one not on eBay or Craigslist for less than $8,000. my email is in my profile and PM also works.

There are a few here in Prescott, AZ one that has 34,000 miles on it
and Bebe Pettit has a 78 for sale.

I don't know what market value is now, it had dropped since I bought mine......

Everything has dropped.
It was a no reserve auction which usually stimulates more activity. There have been several Royales go through Ebay of late with various results
One ran up to $6,900 didn't sell
Another sold at $7,600
Another sold for $11,000
1976 GMC Royal 26' class "A" motorhome in excellent condition. Ready to travel cross country! Records, upgrades, and original owners manual included. Re-powered with a Recon 455 longblock @ 78,755 miles. Appraised @ $25,000 by Alex Sirum GMC .Upgrades over the past 10 years of my ownership:

Which brings up a question...I read about appraisals and Agreed Value insurance - which is always a good idea on any classic. But here we see an appraisal of $25,000 yet the market says $11,000. If an insurance claim was made for a similar unit for agreed value of $25,000 based on similar appraisal - wouldn't the insurance company contest it saying that $11,000 is the market price?

To the question on the thread about insurance "value" and all-- an agreed value
policy takes you out of that volitile pivot location the the insurance valu &^%$
circle. If you had "full coverage" you would have to sit at the bargaining
table and hagle about "what it's worth". The value of a GMC is NOT in what you
put into it-- the cost that is-- it's all about truly what the entire picture is
of the coach value with all the stuff you put in included. Just like on the
"antiques road show" the term "for insurance needs" you should cover it for
______ is the number your agreed value policy should be for. Yes, in the real
world you might be sable to find one for less but that has no bearing on the
value of the coach.
If you waste the coach, they will give you "X" and thats what the agreed value
policy is all about. If you have full coverage and something happens, pull out
your poker face!
To the 2nd part of the thread-- when you go look on Ebay for something, you
expect to "steal" it so why are you upset about the price coaches go for there?
You say "I would not sell it for that", you obviously do not feel you need to
sell your coach that badly. All of that is relative as to what someone will
sell it for ansd another woul pay for it-- the comment has no bearing on that
transaction. I have seen coaches lately going for as much as $50K down to
$2000-- it's all good and if the buyer is happy with what the seller will accept
-- life is good.
"Price" on everything is relative, right now things sell when they are priced
right and right--- right now is low.

No, they would pay the $25,000 because it is a contractual price
adhered in advance when they issued the policy. They cannot change it
unless the policy laspses.
Unless, of course, there is fraud or something such as arson by the
policy holder that can be proven by the insurance company

Well and just like in the housing market, this period of depressed pricing creates opportunity for many people who otherwise wouldn't or couldn't buy in. Just like life- there will always be winners and loosers.
Ebay - I've bought and sold a lot on Ebay. I look at it as the one true test of value. Nothing is stolen - nothing goes too high. It sells for what a buyer is willing to pay. The only thing that can offset that is an auction that isn't promoted - when buyers don't know it's there. But you have to assume that the buyer pool for an item is always checking Ebay.
WRT GMC's...just like Wooden Boats, you've done a good job of creating and maintaining a market. Wood Boats are nothing but grief - but they're so darn cool. The Wood Boat People have made a market by making them the center of a lifestyle - real or imagined. When you buy a Woodie you're buying a ticket to the dance. You get to walk the docks at the show in Tahoe with your sweater over your shoulders and your glass of Chardonnay making pithy comments about this boat and that.
It wouldn't work if the boats weren't intrinsically desireable as art and artifact...but in the early 60's when we got fiberglass we couldn't burn those damn wood boats fast enough . That mind set of labor - maintenance and grief was supplanted by the image of glamor and nostalgia. Shops and support rose up and as a result the price for a Chris Craft went from firewood to $35,000. It takes a lot of effort.
These rigs are the same thing. They could be just another old RV. But their intrinsic quality and style coupled with a strong effort to keep them up there in people's minds make them desireable.
Sure prices are down now - heck I can buy a Woodie today for $10,000 that I couldn't touch 2 years ago for $30. But the market will come back. I don't know if it'll come back to where it was....might level off at 75%...who knows...but with vigilance and promotion it will.
