Any hints, tips, or tricks on how to remove the inside panel by the passenger's right knee, other than a sawzall? We've got a bad squeak in there somewhere, and I've got to fix it.

I took all of the screws out along the top by the windshield, and the ones that go through the 'lip' of the panel into the floor - The panel is loose, but just won't budge. Is it connected into the dash in front of the passenger somehow, or does it have to pull out at the floor first, then up? And does the wall paneling by the dinette have to come out first, or at all?

ANY help is much welcome!

John

John,

There are, indeed, fasteners between the side panel and the dash. After all
this time, I don't really remember the details, but think there are two hex
head screws from the forward side into tinnerman nuts on the side panel.
Hard, but not impossible, to reach from beneath the dash.

John--I had a bad squeek in there as well for about 4 years and was about to rip that panel off even though I knew the consequences of trying it. I finally fixed the squeek by getting under the passenger floor after removing the wheel well and liberally spraying WD40 along or between the wooden floor and the aluminum stringers. Even though it sounded like it was behind the panel, it really was emanating from the floor itself. I discovered it while someone else was driving, and I could feel some movement in the floor that co-incided with the squeek. It hasn't come back. I almost wonder if it was really the wheel liner to the floor, but whatever it was, I'm happy. It's worth a shot.

Thanks, Ken
I'll go back out and do some upside work and try to find the screws. i did look under there quickly before, and saw a bottom piece to the dash that seems to go all the way to the firewall, just to the right of the glove box. It looked like it effectively sealed off that area - maybe a PO put it there, OR, it's a Royale, so who knows how it was built! We'll see, thanks again.

Bob,
Thanks for that info - you may be right, it could be somewhere in that vicinity. As SHE doesn't (hasn't) driven the coach on the highway, I've not had a chance to investigate it myself. I'll try all avenues to fix it - this HAS to go!

Well, it seems that on the bottom of the dash, to the right of the glove box, is a horizontal plastic panel that is part of the dash, and it goes to the firewall and is pop-riveted to the firewall. There is no way to see behind the dash without drilling out the rivets. Then, because this panel is part of the rigid dash, which the padded part is glued to, you would have to remove the dash altogether to get behind it.

There are lots of other pop-rivets that hold the rigid part of the dash to the firewall, such as directly behind the glove box. I don't know if someone took out a bunch of screws, or they kept falling out, or this is just the way Coachmam installed their dashes - but you'd have to do a lot of drilling to get THIS dash off.

Still trying in NW Ohio,

John

I don't remember removing any pop rivets when I removed the dash in
preparation for the new one. There were some between plastic parts, but
none into the basic body. Maybe a production change between '76 & '78. In
any case, I suspect all of the dash was completed by GMC with Coachmen doing
noting in that area.
