Bob, my unconnected city water type connector is in the driver's side
rear, in the same place as the gravity feed connector, only facing
forward. Don't know if it was OEM, a factory screw-up or if an IPO (???
Previous Owner) did it then changed his mind about connecting it.

I wonder if that's a drain or something--you can only see it from the inside?

I have seen some of those wierd connections that are sometimes used with a
shrader fitting to purge the water out of the system for winterization, or
perhaps a bypass for the hotwater heater for same purpose.

Are you sure it's a fill?

Some have hooked the vent line from the tank back to the fill area. If
it hose size and has a cap try filling in the regular fill with the
cap off the smaller fitting and see if air is coming out as you fill.
When full water would spurt out if it's a vent.
