Prior to our trip this past weekend I installed my 3rd new fan clutch.

Last year when our original clutch went out, I installed the Delco Severe Duty
15-4644...........It worked well but it had way too much cycling and loud roar
when it kicked in.

This June I installed the Delco Standard Duty 15-4947......I never heard it and
we ran very hot, I didn't have a temp gauge at the time but when we normally ran
1/16" below the 1/4 mark on the gauge, we were half way between the 1/4 and 1/2
mark with this clutch.

Last week I installed the Advance Auto Medium Duty 21-5046......Absolutely
Perfect !!! You can hear it when you first start up and then it quiets down,
while traveling it kept our coach in the normal cool range where the coach has
always ran, the same as when I first purchased it......I also added a temp gauge
and it stayed around the 200 degree range the entire time no matter if we were
going up hills, cruising, etc. We had full fresh water tanks and we're towing
the trailer with the Harley in it.

This is definitely the clutch performance I was looking for !

I plan to keep the Standard Duty as a spare, so I have a basically new 15-4644
severe duty to sell if anyone is interested.

It is a little late now but when I went through those 4 useless Hayden clutches and then later the two good but different AC Delco model clutches looking for the correct one, I just kept returning them and getting another one. I did have the Hayden engineer's name and number who said they could not meet the GM specs in my back pocket. I ended up not needing to have the seller call Hayden direct. They just accepted them back and after the 4th one refunded my money.

Ac-Direct accepted my AC Delco 15-4644 back and gave me a replacement 15-4208 plus a partial refund. Again I had a Delco engineer's name in my pocket to vouch for the correct number if needed. Again I never need to use it.

Outside ambient temps were in the 75 to 80 range....typical for Wisconsin.

That is that "Standard Duty" which in my opinion is too light, it's like the one
I just removed that had me running hot.

Thanks Ray. I got that number written down. Sounds like what I have been looking for. Mine never comes on, which is ok until I climb for a few miles.

I can hear the medium duty fan clutch cycle, but it's very quiet and sounds very
natural and in sync with how I think it should work.

I had never heard of the 15-4644 being called "severe duty" before.

Years back when a GM engineer recommended it to me he called it a
"heavy duty".

Where did you find the "severe duty" designation?

I'll see if I can re-locate where I saw that Emery.

Several places I saw clutch's classified as "Standard" duty, "Medium" duty and
"Severe" duty.

Dan

When I was working with the AC Delco Engineer a few years back, He stated the 15-4644 was designated for a fan with a 2" longer blade length and a 3/4 inch deep pitch. It was also designated to be driven with a minimum of two 1/2 inch v-belts.

The recommended clutch at the time based on the fan pitch, number of blades, and blade length was the 15-4208. At my request the engineer also looked up the original GM clutch by GM part number and arrived at the same 15-4208 conclusion. At the time he also called the 15-4644 a "severe" duty clutch, while he called the 15-4208 a "heavy" duty. Designations or names aside what he really did was match the 15-4208 clutch to the our application.

Unfortunately now the 15-4208 has been dropped from production. It sounds like people here are finding the replacement for the 15-4208 clutch as too weak or too slow for our application. So finding another clutch that operates like the 15-4208 is a good find.

Thanks for the information and the find. I wonder who makes the Advanced clutch. I sure hope it is not Hayden. I do not think so because the numbering is not similar. I went through two year of fighting with Hayden engineering before they admitted that they had changed the turn on temperature down too low for our GMC application.

By spending one penny more I got the thing 59.99 minus 24 bux, online special. Ken, I might just bring it to Du Quoin and we can look it over good to see if we can find the maker before I install it.

No need to wonder: The 215046 is listed on the Advance Auto Parts site as
an Imperial.

It looks very much like the (reportedly satisfactory) clutch on Rob's coach
with one exception: 180* from the tang where the control spring is
anchored, the photo shows a similar tang. In the photo, there is no slot
visible in the extra tang. On Rob's clutch there IS a slot, as if the
spring could be adjusted to change the operating temperature.

Anyone seen/know of such?
