I have a Craigs Lister with 4) two year old 6v exide batteries for $100. that came from Sams. Very tempting for this broke restorer. How can I check without buying battery tester?

Load em up and take to an auto parts store. AutoZone, Advance, etc.,
will check them for you probably without you having to take them inside.

Better yet, have the seller meet you at the Auto parts store with them. (Pick one close to him.) The condition being, you buy them if they pass inspection.

Odds are, if he knows they are good, he will do it.

New ones at Sams or Costco are generally less than $80. Life, if treated well is about 6 to 8 years, so these are 1/3 to 1/4 "worn out", possibly worse if they have not been kept charged well and not over discharged. I don't think they are any special bargain.

"Testing" batteries is difficult at best. Voltage tells little other than the state of charge. Capacity is sometimes checked with a load test, but again, not very definitive. In short, there is no real way to know the true condition of these batteries.

Just my thoughts and opinions. Now if the pair was $50, go for it. Core charges these days run $7-9 each.
