Should the top hats on the bogie pins extend to the outside of the bogie?
I removed the large nuts on the bogie pins and the top hats appear to stop inside the bogie casting. There appears to be no adjustment for end play for the control arms.

Thanks
Dennis

Yes. I have never seen a bushing worn so much that the "top hat"
didn't stand a little proud of the casting. When ever I adjust the end
play I take the wheel and shock off so that the arm is free and I can
shake it all around, lube it, and then make the end play adjustment as
per the manual. I know, a lot of extra work. But it sure eliminates
come-backs. The thickness of the two brass washers will determine how
much the "top hat" sticks out. Wear in the bushings will cause the
wobble. Clean everything before making the adjustments.

Yes, very helpful.
Closer look I see what I thought was a machined boss on the bogie IS
the end of the top hat. May take a while to get it to move -- have
them soaking.
Thank you!

Dennis,
Did you check the pins for hardness?
There are still lot of soft pins out there that will not last long.

Jim,
Not new pins, just some preventive maintenace; I am cleaning and greasing the bogies and trying to assess the amount of play in the pins. Reading the maintenance manual it gives a procedure for adjusting the end play on the top hat. These top hats are likely frozen in place by corrosion so I have them soaking in hopes of getting them to move.
The GM "allowable" play in the control arm is 1/8 inch measured at the spindle (as I read in the archives and on Gene's site) so I am trying to see where mine fall.
Terry's guidance on cleaning everything includes pulling the shocks -- I have new ones on hand, so that will now be part of the project.
Just thinking/suggesting that adjusting the top hats should be considered by anyone installing a new four bag system -- because you have access.
It doesn't seem like too many owners undertake the top hat adjustment with any frequency -- I saw in an album Arch posted that it took a 16 ton press to remove the frozen top hats when he did new pins/bushings.
Thanks for you input.

Dennis
