The stores are flogging oil this fall.
Does anyone have a current updated listing of what number/letter
combinations on oil products we should be looking for our engines?
Sorry to do this to y'all again....<g>

my understanding is that you want oil rated as SL or CI-4 or CI-4plus. if it says SL/SM or CI-4/CJ-4 don't buy it.

I copied this about Dello oil from this forum a month or two ago. Sorry I cannot give credit, but it seemed pretty informative. My trouble is finding Dello that is not LE.
Paste:
DELO 400 LE (low emission) doesn't have the service rating for a GMC. Not enough zddp. DELO 400 is rated for a GMC. The amount of zddp varies with the weight of the oil. I use DELO 400, 40W in my tired 403 to keep the oil pressure up. The 40W is high- almost 13000 ppm. Basically, when buying oil- Look at the 'service rating'
* SJ 1225 ppm zddp
* SL 1100ppm zddp
* SM 800 ppm zddp
*CI-4 1300 ppm zddp
*CJ-4 1100 ppm zddp
Generally if the rating is 'SJ' your ok. Stay away from DELO LE's and others that show they are rated for 'CJ'or a rating of SM. An oil with a maximum rating of SJ is the best choice. For more info, check out the tech article for September 2009

philipswanson wrote on Sun, 05 September 2010 18:09 | Your best bet is the Mobile 1s with an ACEA A3 rating which must pass the most stringent cam/lifter wear tests. Long term use of super high detergent oil, as in diesel oils, are not good for gas engines. Our engines do not produce the soot like diesels do. There is allot more to lubrication than ZDDP. You will find that the 10W-30 and 10W-40 High Mileage Mobil 1s are ACEA A3 rated and contains plenty of phosophorous to protect our engines. Yes, this is a European standard test. Talk to Mobil 1 tech if you need more information. Don't listen to all the ZDDP hype on the net. ZDDP is just part of the story.

Yes, Please do since every CI4+ or CJ4 oil I have ever seen is also rated SJ or SM.
That kind of blows a hole in that theory. There may be some oil out there that is diesel rated and not gasoline rated. I just have never seen it
I was driving my coach today and noticed it has 98,000 miles on it. As far as I can tell it has always used Shell Rotella since new. I get 6,000 mile to a quart of oil. I use Rotella 15W40 in ALL of my diesels and all of my older vehicles including motorcycles. If they made it in a lighter weight I would use it in my new / more modern engines.
A clean engine is a happy engine. I'll stay with my CI-4+ Shell Rotella.

I found "SF" oil at Wall-Mart.
<http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=33061>
Bought almost 2 cases. I haven't seen if after that one time.
I have been told it might not have the best anti-sludge package. But if changed fairly often, it shouldn't be a concern. Price wise I could change it twice as often and it would still be cheaper. I just have to find a reliable source.

What you are striving for is target of 1200 PPM. Above around 1100? no added wear protection occures and since the ZDDP degrades over the life of the oil you want to start slightly higher. I believe that 1200 was back to mid 80's SF levels and the height of ZDDP in off the shelf API oils. Products like ZDDPlus are a drop in one bottle type add that gives you a total end concentration dependant on what the concentration was to start. This initial level is easiest to just get from the oil manufactures cut sheets as they all vary. For example, all the products in the family of Mobil 1's are differnt depending on which one you chose. You might end up over or under when you add. Over isn't so bad on the Zinc, but too high a Phosphorus level can attack metal surfaces from the research I have done. How much over causes this I don't exactly know. I think adding one bottle is safe. If anyone wants to correct me here I what I think is correct info, feel free as I want to learn more.

Hi Mike
I have been using this oil for at least 4 years now on a new rebuild that I did myself with a JimB cam ran EOS and Accell 10-40 for the first 500 miles dumped the oil and filter been doing 2500 mile oil changes since 45000 on the engine now uses +- 1/2 qt. per change like this since the rebuild. WalMart has this oil most of the time.

Right they are going for the nostalgia card. SF has the right ZDDP levels but had a short run and was superceeded by API SG with better detergent properties. I wish they had "reissued" as SG not SF.

The nurse doing blood work on me told me that when cooking you want to use SATURATED FAT not unsaturated as the unsaturated breaks down and forms harmful substances at high temps. So the old frys in LARD were better for you as well as tasted better. As usual most things are the oposite of what they seem. Olive oil is good for you on your salad though.
