Hey, Just to let you know. After all the problems, broken bolts, etc. the GMC is up and running. Took it for a 20 mile ride tonight, seems to run fairly well. I have a couple of questions though. The generator light glows dimly, generator was not charging, had it rebuilt and seems to be working fine, any idea why the generator light is dimly lite. Also, temperature gauge seems to run at about 1/2 to 3/4, is that normal for the 455. Any suggestions or ideas are appreciated and thanks again for the help.

You need to check the output of the alternator, if ok then probably a ground problem on the circuit board the alt light plugs into. As far as the temp, if the sender is original then the 1/2 to 3/4 is too high, mine and others doesn't exceed 1/4 to 3/8. Don't ignore the temp situation, I would install an additional backup that actually shows degrees, mine runs in the 190-200 range.

Hi Mary
Check Gene Fishers site, if your coach is not equipped with the Alternator Protection Cable you should order one ASAP, I would disconnect the coach battery and not start the engine until this is checked, this is what causes dashs to go up in flames, several coaches have been lost to this problem, good luck with your new engine

this will also eliminate some false dim light problems

Here are some discussions about dim alternator lights
http://gmcmotorhome.info/engine.html#alternator
and there is also a blown fuse that can cause this problem
