One of the most recently joined members of GMCNet, and, finally, GMC
ownership, is Stick Miller, a prolific writer. Long before I met him at a
Humane Society Game Night (that's got to pique some interest), I enjoyed his
columns in our local newspaper, the Americus Times Recorder, in which my
birth and many of my childhood visits to my grandparents was reported.
His column published a couple of weeks ago is pertinent to our addiction, so
I got his permission to ask bdub to post it:

I don't think it matters whose coach you purchase, something will not work
on the first trip regardless of the length.
Nicely written story.
I had no idea that Stick's dad bought a Condor. For some reason Ford thought
it was their answer to the Dodge Travco. Not quite, at least, from the
outside. However, I suspect that from the inside they were pretty much the
same including the ride.

Weelll, it's like this: The Humane Society gets more stray cats & dogs than
they know what to do with. So, periodically, we have this "Game" where they
lay out a long straight track with white lane separators. There are two
white starting lines, 50' apart, across all umpteen lanes. Then they sell
equal numbers of cats & dogs to local redneck racing fans, who line up with
their dogs at the first starting line and their cats at the second starting
line. At the sound of the shotgun...
Naahh, I made that all up -- MY idea for a Game Night.
What they really did was bring a bunch of blackjack tables and roulette
wheels into the largest meeting facility in the area (a building at the
local trade school, financed, by the way, with $1M of my deceased uncle's
money). Then they sold tickets to all the local high society folks (that
is, anyone with anything larger than 2 dimes to rub together in their
pocket) so they could come buy drinks and gamble their tickets away. Being
as how the head agitator for the HS is a doctor's wife, all the others were
coerced into attending also. Our presence was to humor the deceased uncle's
wife.
Someone had told me Stick was looking at old motorhomes, so when I (6'2")
looked up and recognized him while bumming a free coke at the bar, I
introduced myself and mentioned his interest. We wound up talking the rest
of the evening away, with the eventual result that he decided a GMC could be
parked in the backyard of his historic district (that's the OLD part of this
old town) home and the Bluebird he REALLY wanted couldn't.
I said the title would pique interest, NOT sustain it. :-)

Here is the quote from the article that I love:
"My bride was quietly screaming that my wheels were off the pavement while the side mirrors told another story."
I'll be this is one many have experienced. Our first hundred miles was a little like that. I, hearing her concern, was nervous and kept double checking myself in the mirrors. Now, I think nothing of it.
Ruth is driving more and more. The first trip to a local lake had me thinking "the wheels ere off the road". I decided to not mention it, and rather leaned forward a bit an took a peek in the split mirror. Sure enough she was right on the money. I leaned back quickly so my head would not be in her way and left her to it.
