My steering is sticking / binding.
I got to turn and it won't. Well it will but takes a lot of force.
It only seems to happen turning left ( don't quote me on that )
If it sticks and I turn the steering wheel the other way just a little it frees up.
I rebuilt my steering shaft, it was frozen, and slides nicely now.
What else could it be?
I suppose I'd better check the PS fluid....

Keith,
I hate to ask this, but did you decide to take "just a little" play out of
the steering box while you were tinkering there? If you did, you've probably
gotten it adjusted too tight and are binding on the "high spot". Pull the
steering box and adjust it properly IAW the manual or the presentation by
Don Wirth at http://www.gmceast.com/technical/Wirth_GMCMH_Steering_Box.pdf.
If you didn't tinker, but repacked the steering column CV joint, as you
should have, but used any grease other than Valvoline Synpower with MSO2,
you WILL, in my experience, have binding.

Your CV joint is binding. I drove all the way from northern Virginia to
Charlotte, North Carolina with the exact same behavior, and it was
nerve-wracking at best. That joint sits right at the bottom of the upper
steering shaft where it pokes out of the floor pan. It operates at an
extreme angle and you must use molybdenum-fortified grease to prevent
binding. Ken is right--Valvoline Synpower is the right stuff. I had used
Mobile 1 red grease and that is what had caused my issues on the way to
Charlotte.
The boot over that CV joint may have cracked letting it rinse out and start
binding. Disassemble it and check for corrosion. If the balls and races are
deeply pitted, then you'll have to replace the joint--they are available
from our specialty suppliers but they are dear. The balls are not a standard
size (.624" versus the standard .625", as I recall), and therefore cannot be
replaced unless you enlarge the races. That requires some expertise and a
lot of luck. Balls and races that are marked but not deeply pitted will work
fine with the right grease--this joint doesn't have to turn fast (compared
with the axle CV joints), it just has to turn smoothly.
Bert and Faye Curtis sell replacement boots.
After you reinstall the joint on the upper steering shaft (and for me this
took several tries and a lot of cussing, partly because I had not marked the
way things went together well enough--that outer race is dead hard and
resists scratch marks), seal the opening in the clamp with gasket sealer to
keep water out of the joint.

Dang.
I disconnected the bottom of the coupler and no more binding.
It's the CV joint
Dang.
I just rebuilt it last fall, I did use moly grease, I'm sure of it.
Looks like I get to try again.

Any tips for us that would like to do it right the first time? (IE: Can we learn from your learning experiences?)
It WILL be my first time on my '78. (Torn/worn out OEM boot.) But it will NOT be the first time on my '73. I didn't get the top boot clamp tight enough, allowing water into the joint. For the next time(s), I think I'll use real CV joint clamps, with a "real" tool. I might as well buy the tool, I need to do all my CV joints on BOTH coaches. (Not to mention all the other vehicles.)

Is there a secret to getting the boots over the blue spline? Hot water?

It has been quite a few years since I did my '73, but IIRC, I took the shaft apart at the CV joint, so I did not have to slide either boot over the spline.

Thanks Kelvin and Mike.
GMC Dixielander Chuck Boyd drove 2.5 hours out to Middle Creek to show me how it
is done. With at least three hands, the CV boot can be horsed over the shaft.
What would GMC'er do without souls like Chuck Boyd to help us less competent
coach owners. Thanks again brother Chuck. I look forward to being able to pass
your care for others forward.

Wish I could help but unless I took it all apart again I really can't
remember what I did differently than the first time.
I just was surprised to find my carefully packed CV fully of waterlogged
grease. Figured out where it could have been coming from and did
something about it. What that something was is lost to CRS, I"m afraid...
It was obvious - the second time. :^)
