Any way to zero out an hour meter? Other than connect it to a power supply and run it forward for a bunch of days?

Tom,

NO

Most hour meters are 4 places and there are 8760 of those in a year.

Three choices I know of-
Put a sticky label on the face and do the math when you care.
Disassemble and reset the counter (not always successful).
Buy a new meter and put it in.

I do both 1 & 2 most frequently.

I replaced my faulty mechanical Hobbs meter on the Onan with a new digital one ($30.00 at Digi-Key with oil change reminder). I was hoping there was a way to set it to read what the old one did when it died this summer, but no such luck... wasn't even any instructions in the box other than a cut-out mounting diagram.

Which model did you get? I'm looking at Digi-Key now.

I got the 700-1003-ND, its LCD with a maintenance reminder and snaps into the existing mounting hole.

Tom,

When I replaced the hour meter in Double Trouble I just connected it the
poles of a spare 12 volt battery until it got the same hours as the one I
was replacing. It just clicked along merrily for about two weeks.

Rob,

And just what is it that makes you think you haven't now approached the
useful life of the (used-to-be) new RTM?

Ken,

It's a Quartz one - like the one Gene provided the link to except it doesn't
say Hobbs.

Hopefully it's like a Timex - "Takes a licking and keeps on ticking!" ;-)
