Fellow GMCer Jerry Holloway and I are going to the Atlanta South Pull-a-Part
tomorrow morning. Mostly on general principals -- sorta like my diabetic
visits to the candy store.
The only thing I have specificatly in mind to harvest is some windshield
washer nozzles & pumps for the radiator mister. What else am I forgetting
that I really should pick up? For myself or others?

Is anyone still wanting the old ACDelco vacuum pumps? I've about given up
on finding good ones -- even on Volvos.
But I'll look.

Ken,
I found a Sanden A/C compressor on of all things, a Range Rover last week, that looks pretty close to fitting a GMC. Haven't tried it yet, but it has the 2 V pulley, and it looks like if you take the service valves off, it might have the GM hose port underneath them which would be sweet. Worth checking out if you know someone who needs one.

Craig,
I've seen Sanden's on 'most every kind of vehicle, many of them with ports
on the rear, but never one with GM-compatible ports. But then I've never
been to a big truck yard. From what I'm hearing, a lot of those have the GM
option.

Although, changing the head on a Sanden is a matter of the
correct head (many to choose from for nearly any
configuration), five or seven small bolts (depending on
model), and a $12 gasket kit. Twenty minutes worth of time
and you can have a compressor for almost any application.
The head might cost @ $60. The Sanden service manuals give
complete instructions on how to do it.
I'm in the process of rebuilding two Sandens, and outside of
a couple of special tools to remove and install shaft seals,
they are embarrassingly easy to work on. From a service and
repair POV, they are a work of art. Any of you guys that
know which end of a hammer to use to check tire pressure can
do this.

I've been successful pulling pumps from GM and Volvo's here. I also have a
stack of wiper arms and speedo units. I can get ELII optic units, steering
wheels and wiper motors. I'm sure there are plenty of Sanden units there
also, just don't know what to look for.

Paul,
You were right, the Volvo DID have the vacuum pump. But it was, for some
reason, on the passenger's side. I've never seen one there before. I think
there was a computer or similar in its location on the driver's side.
At any rate, I got it and will bring it with your 1227730. The price will
be a bit higher than the last time I bought one, but I haven't looked at the
receipt to see just how much.
Overall it was a disappointing day at P-a-P. Neither Jerry nor I had any
pressing need for anything, so we mostly wandered and oooh'd and aaah'd. I
did find a pretty nifty rear a/c housing containing most of a conventional
underdash evaporator. After spending about 30 minutes pulling the 20 rusty
screws with the single #1 Phillips screwdriver I had, we got it out. After
toting it the 150 yards to the office, I refused to pay the price.
P-a-P has a kiosk where the complete list of prices was formerly posted so I
could have easily check what the evaporator was to cost. Now there are no
posted prices and those at the register are about 50% above what they were
on the last list I saw. I refused the evaporator at $68+ and Jerry the
handful of courtesy lights at $3.25 each. All we wound up buying was the
vacuum pump, one new style tail light (the only uncracked one of 10), and a
few washer spray nozzles. But we had fun all morning.

Glad to see you found it! Hate to see them go to the crusher when many people in the GMC community could still use one. I'm wiling to bet it still work like new too.
If the pump was on the passenger side then the car probably had the v6 engine. I've only found one like that so far myself.
BTW, If there's anything in particular anyone is looking for and having trouble finding let me know. I have 4 Pull a Parts hear in Ohio within 10-30 min from me that I visit on a regular basis.

For the side door, grab Chevy vadn GMC van "L" pins from the van rear doors for the stop strap. These are the black phosphate coated pins that drop in and pull for added door opening ln large items on the vans Also Caddy door handle pull straps with the vinyl with faux stitching over it.

Mike,
FWIW, If you have the time and tools, you might get the trans (it is a switch pitch) and the Final drive which is a 3.21. Both are getting hard to find.
|
Larry,
I do not live any where near Moss landing CA. I posted that hoping a Californian GMC'er would look into it.
Last day of the half off sale is tommorrow. The place was packed today.
I got there when it opened, bought my morning haul at 1:30 and went to lunch. At 2pm I was back looking and picking until they kicked me out. I spent a few hours in vain looking for vacuum pumps and the VSS that can be used with our speedometers. (Cavalier?) I would have been better off spending the time pulling the wiper motor from the Lumina van.... but didn't. (It would have worked better with two working as a team.)
I got:
2 steering wheels (S-10, two styles) - $5.49 each.
2 Lumina wiper arms - one 1.99, no charge on the second.
1 pair newer tail-lights - 10.49 each or $20.89 for the pair.
2 chrome spare tire covers (with rusty centers) - $3.24 each.
1 door strap (metal, folding, spring loaded) - no charge
4 electric cruise control transducers. (2 types) $7.99 + .99 core each
5 level sensors for EL2 system. (2 direct fit) $3.99 each
1 60's vintage GM wiper motor for my Thermasan. $9.99 +.99 core
1 Audi seat switch module - no charge
PLUS: $2.00 entry fee, $6.68 Environmental Fee.
Like I said, %50 off for one more day. (All Pick-n-Pulls, nation wide) It was packed and the weather was warm and dry. (For Oregon) I could have made a killing renting tools and selling concessions.

Mike, If you are referring to the VSS I used on my cruise project they are only found on 89-90 cavilers & Buick Skyhawks with mechanical speedometers. IF you find one that has a manual transmission it is the same sensor ,just has an adapter on it that can be removed.
You should also pull some sensors from other GM's to get the right speedometer gear you will need. 4 cylinder Fiero's are a good choice as well as early 90's Buicks. Remember you will still need the Buffer module to convert the signal as well. 86-88 Cadillac's & some Buicks are a good source for these.
If you need more Info just PM/E-mail me.
