Since Richard is out of the country, I will have to send this ;>)
*Free phone calls* - not computer-to-computer, but computer-to-phone.
If you are not using the gmail "call phone" , you might want to consider
using it for when JimK puts you on hold;>).
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=188269
For this, Skype charges 2.1 cents/min, MagicJack is $40, and ( gmail, does
the call part of ) cell phones/iphone/ ipad , which works anywhere but the
cost is $40+ each month.
If you have wifi or internet access, (free, like from McDonalds, or
STARBUCKS or etc) You can call, from your computer, any phone in the USA or
CANADA for free.
To get ready to make free phone calls from Gmail , you might do the
following:
1 open a gmail account
*http://tinyurl.com/2btuwww
*
2 test your microphone (to see if you have one on your laptop)
http://www.ehow.com/how_2293085_test-computer-microphone.html
(short form is:)
Start -programs- accessories - entertainment-- sound recorder)
if your computer does not have a microphone buy one at the Dollar Store for
$1, (also has an earphone)
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=35687&title=laptop-mic&cat=3619
Many laptop computers already have a camera and mic, so you are set.
If you want a camera, here is one from GE for $20
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=35686&title=usb-camera&cat=3619
( Video is a whole different topic ;>)
not hard to find a free wifi these days

Interesting concept. However, what I don't like is Google setting yet
another hook in the mouth of computer users. They've grabbed enough
information from me already. I quote from the web page.
"In addition to sharing voice and video chats with your contacts from
computer to computer, you can also place and receive phone calls to any
landline or mobile phone number in Gmail."
Sounds innocent enough. However, once you give Google information it is no
longer yours but theirs. Even if you delete some piece of information, like
someone's address, phone number and other notes related to the person, they
still keep it for their own marketing purposes.
Big brother is no longer the federal government or some Russian agent in
Moscow but Google.

Gene,
Not exactly out of the country; we are in Manhattan.
Walking all around the city in search of a GMC to photograph!
None yet but did run into a movie star (Mr. Big, AKA Chris Noth)
at the Plaza Hotel.
A little amazed they let us in a place so upscale as
a hotel which housed the Beatles; I guess we fooled 'em!
Thanks again Gene (and others) for covering during
my vacation.

I'm pretty sure Duane Simmons isn't going to make it so I'm
desparately seeking any and all replacements. I was hoping for some
assistance from Jim Hupy but he's wrapped around the axle with his
wife's major health issues.

I tried this yesterday, pretty cool. Still, nothin' like free phone calls to land lines and cell phones, to choke internet bandwidth. Besides, I thought we were supposed to be creating jobs, not eliminating them LOL
