This group has helped me in the past when the VW forum had let me down so i hope no one minds, i'm kinda' desperate.

My 95 cabrio developed some bad noises and I happened to have a 97 cabrio with a good engine so i paid a guy to do the swap.

He's a very good mechanic with experience in just about everything except European cars.

He swapped the intake and everything else that was unique to the 95. It's all back together and he can't get it to start.

We're not hearing the fuel pump come on.

As the car started an ran OK before we assume the problem is related to something during the engine swap.

Any suggestions?

Is there a simple way to jump the fuel pump and force it to run?

Have you checked the fuses?

Check the circuit to the pump with a test light also.

Cost: Both are free. just labor. :)

One other thing: Is there a fuel pump reset switch, you know like
fords have? It may have tripped.

I don't believe there is any kind of pump reset.

And i assume (dangerous word) that all the obvious electrical things have been checked. This is a pretty smart guy.


The specific quesion is this; does anyone know if the fuel pump runs constanntly in this system or if it uses a sensor to cycle it on and off.

These euro (Saab, Audi, VW) sytems are similar- bosch fuel pump and either pressure regulator or a pressure sensor that cycles the pump on and off.

THe difference makes trouble shooting, or jumpering MUCH easier.

OK, i hot wired the fuel pump and then we learned we have no spark.


So, what connection or component would lock out spark and fuel in the context of an engince change?

I bet it will be simple when the answer surfaces.

Remove the positive battery cable, let it set for 5 min or so, then
re-attatch it. Be very sure that all accessories are turned off, and the
doors are closed, trunk also. If you have an underhood light, take the bulb
out. This will reflash the computer. Sounds like you activated the anti
theft software. If not this, notice that I said positive cable, not
negative. It has been quite a while since I was at Porsche/Audi school but I
think that is how you do it. If you have VW's scan tool, it will do it too.

If you need a scan tool, the generic ones do not really scan the VW cmputers very well. A common interface for VW Auto Group (VAG) cars is commonly refered to as a "VAG COM". There are clones but the "real" ones are from Ross Tech.
