Hi all,
We have had a 73 sequoia 260 for about a year now with a Dick Paterson built 455 with 60,000 m on it. Went camping for the week before school starts, maiden voyage after major tour of mechanicals and got amazing fuel economy. We did some city and rolled at 55-70 mph. I was hoping for 10 but this is incredible. Previous owner was clocking 8.3 I cant believe it. This is what i think contributed to these numbers.
-rebuilt the transmission with parts from a diesel torque converter and parts from a 67 switch pitch. ~ 1100 stall original 3.08 gearing.
- re-curved distributor with heavy weights and light springs and adjustable vac advance
- cut 3 loops off quadrajet power piston spring.
- full 6 wheel suspension and brake job with 6 wheel alignment. (rear bushings, relay arm, idler arm, ball joints, rear torsion bars).
- took off three max air vents on roof. there is no air conditioners.
Not only that, it handled like a dream, rock solid on ruts and crappy Quebec back roads.
I had plans to put a Chev tbi with megasquirt but I am afraid to touch anything. What kind of numbers are you all getting?
Cheers,
Keith

how many tanks of fuel did you burn on the trip? the tanks are very hard to fill equally on each fill up so mileage will vary from tank to tank. i get 6 to 11 on trips and have to average it all out at the end.

I have kept detailed mileage records for many years on several vehicles. I have found that it takes calculating the MPG over 5 fills to get a represenative MPG figure.
