HA! Just bought a used Honda EV6010 water cooled generator for our GMC.

Question: How to install and also to include installing on a roll out like our Onans do. I'm sure some of y'all have done this successfully.
BTW, this one runs on propane as it came from a diesel engined coach. Anyone else running on propane??
Thx, Michael at GEMRECS

Mike,

If anyone has done this, it would be Jim Bounds. He's installed a bunch of the Hondas and likes the Honda generator a lot. I'm sure he'd know if you can use the slides.

However, I think all these generators are quite user friendly with all the hookups and service items on the front side, so the roll-out feature is not all that necessary.

Mike,
I can send you the mounting template if you need it, or you might be able to
find one pre-made on ebay.
I don't see the need for the roll out. I did make a little cart for mine
when i had to remove it for repairs.

I know we all have our drum that we beat about certain things, and mine is
that unless you are running it on it's own battery, make sure you clip the
charging wire. It took 250 hours for my stator to get burned up, and it took
the controller board with it. $1,000 repair!

Well worth it. I went to the Honda EV6010 guru in Iowa. He said at about
15,000 hours i might need valves, other than that, just keep the oil and
filter changed. I was contemplating converting to propane until he said it's
harder on the Honda's valves.

From what I understand, the Honda is designed to be serviced from one side. (Like most modern generators.) As long as that side faces out, there is no need for a slide out, allowing for a more secure, cleaner, installation.

I do not know how this works in practice.

The only reason I can see to access the rear of the ev6010 is for a repair
that would involve the starter and/or the radiator. All maintenance can be
easily reached from the side.

Thanks Pete, I would like the mounting template.
I hope to have it checked out before installation by a reputable Honda dealer, changing the fluids, etc, Also will have the pros install it. This one will replace the 6K Onan in our 76 GMC Edgemonte which we are slowly transitioning over to from the 74 GMC. It will support two Carrier roof A/C units from one of the parts coaches..........Thx, Michael

I tell ya guys, it licked the red of my candy stick when Honda discontinued
their entire RV generator line.  I think it happened bececause of many reasons.
Honda does nothing if they are second place, Onan has a stranglehold on the RV
industry and I mean that!  Most of the Honda units were used in commercial
application-- tool trucks, Tv production trucks-- stuff like that.  Of course
there are contrasting views as there is with anything but I feel those Honda
units were awesome and really performed.

Now, here we are.  I have been trying to replace the performance I got used to
and took for granted.  What I found though is there are many people that were
just as upset as i was, there are 1/2 million of these units (I was told) out in
the field with just as many people wanting to keep the Honda unit out there.
this has spurred a rise in shops fopcused on maintaining and rebuilding the
Honda, specifically the EV-6010.  It has become a desirable comodity so there
are many people who want them which created people who rebuild them.

I have one of the last units, in a box, for our next restoration.  I have a
builder outside of Orlando who is one who will maintain a parts inventory and do
rebuilds on the 4010 and 6010 Hondas.  At this point I will be installing
rebuilt Honda units-- I feel that is a better buy than the Onan or Generac.
Trying the portable units did not work out very well-- they simply were not
reliable enough to turn them on, fire up the roof AC unit and forget them.  That
experiment cost me $, had to refund the unit and put in something else.

So-- I am saying a rebuilt Honda is the way to go.  Cost actually have raised
from the new price.  Currently, it will cost you @ $4500 and up for a rebuild
Honda.  Let me know if you are interested.  Parts will be available for years
and in that we are all about removating quality machines, I think throwing in a
rebuilt Honda is a great idea!
