Gene,
I installed a Robertshaw thermostat when I fitted the aluminum manifold. I
did not have a copy of the manual for the thermostat when I installed it. I
installed it with the "pointy" end up (towards radiator).
I am a bit confused by what you've noted below.
I did a Google search for the Robertshaw 330-180 thermostat but have not
been able to find the manual.
Are you saying that the thermostat should be "clocked" so that a little
dimple on the flange faces forward towards the radiator?
Regards,

Benny,
When you install the Robertshaw thermostat make sure the little dimple on
the flange goes toward the radiator. The manual says if it isn't one bank
of cylinders will run hotter than the other. I don't know if it will but I
am not going to find out either.

Hi Rob: I`m not Gene, but that is what the book says..X7425 6K6
The thermostat consists of a restriction valve actuated
by a thermostatic element. A 195° thermostat
is used and the use of thermostats rated above 195
degrees F. control temperatures are not recommended.
This is mounted in the housing at the cylinder
head water outlet above the water pump. The
thermostat should be installed with the word
FRONT up and toward the radiator. This way the
coolant has a smooth unobstructed flow through the
thermostat and water outlet. See Figure 7.
When the thermostat is incorrectly installed, as
in "B" shown in Figure 7, the thermostat valve acts
as abaffle, forcing the coolant to change direction to
pass around the valve. This change in direction interrupts
the smooth unobstructed flow of coolant to the radiator and can possibly result in overheating conditions.

In the manual X7525 that is shown in Figure 8.
Look more closely at the picture and you will see that the original thermostat used in the GMC had a flap that opened. It was important to put the flap so that the opening was forward.
HOWEVER, the Robertshaw Thermostat doesn't have that flap so it really doesn't matter what the orientation is. Just make sure that you get the right side up!

Rob,
The pointy side does go up. Manual was probably the wrong word. I was referring to the instructions with the thermostat. If you look at a Robertshaw thermostat on the pointy side you will see a small dimple or maybe I should say inverter dimple that goes toward the radiator. It is directly in line with one of the supports. Come by in Duquoin and I will show it to you if you can't find it. Would appreciate the visit anyway.
