I've been tracking down looseness in the steering gear and have finally (should
have seen it sooner) noticed that the spline in the lower U-joint is loose
against the spline on the steering gear input shaft. The PO appears to have
replaced the lower shaft and CV joint at one time and it looks like the steering
gear has fresher paint than the rest of the frame (well, it has a trace of paint
left). When I pull it apart and inspect the mating parts each appear to have no
real wear. But when slid together there is quite a bit of play. The PO also
appears to have tried to eliminate the play, as there is what looks like a
non-standard bolt clamping them together. When I attempt to torque the bolt I
can't get all the play out. Question: What could be wrong? Are there
mismatched splines that could have been used? Is there a special bolt for that
application? Is there a torque spec that will result in the collapse of the
U-joint and and result in a tight fit? I'm puzzled. Thanks for any advice.

If I remember correctly, there is a notch in the splined section that only allows you to insert the bolt on the clamp in one position. Without seeing yours, it's possible that something has been changed and that's causing the play. When mine was tightened up, there is no play at all in that area.
I believe that Dave Lenzi has these available, or one of the Jims should be able to help you. I think there are pictures of the parts on JimK's site that may be helpful.

Gary,
The spline on the gear box could be undersize if some
one installed a steering gear box out of an old bread truck.
One of the PO's of one of my coaches did this and put
a spoon handle in for a shim. The total turn is different
on the truck box from the GMC box. I don't remember
the count. You can check the archives for that or maybe
someone will come in with the count.

Gary,
In Don Wirth's gear box presentation there's a tip for using a socket wrench
to measure the input spline; you probably should be sure you've got the
right one:
