Just wanted to share this one with the forum. We used to use
the usual tank deodorizer liquids in the black water tank.
That stuff mostly masks the odor, the fragrance is overpowering,
and after a few hot days in use, it's not a good smell.

A cousin who used to work in the RV repair biz gave us a sample of
something he thought worked well. We tried it, and he's right.
It's called "Break-Up Plus" and can be gotten at various RV supply
places, or here:
http://www.conservationchemistry.com/

The scented version is quite mild smelling. We haven't tested the unscented
yet, but will.

We have absolutely no affiliation with these people. Just a happy customer.

This is an interesting post. With several recent trips behind us, I used the
new Aqua-Kem Green and I'm not happy with that at all.

Would be interesting to hear what others have tried and what works the best.

I will let you know about the Break up product. After reading the
post about it here, I ordered some on line. The company emailed me
back and said that a shop a mile from my house handled their products
and if I wanted to cancel my order, they would abide by my decision.
So far, So good. I hope the product is as good as the backbone of
the company is.

just my two cents worth, when i first bought my gmc, i read where someone
used a live bacteria solution. (bdub's site???)

Years in boating (the black tanks are semi-transparent) had taught me that
most of the deodorizers just create sludge on the bottom of the tank.

I followed the directions of cleaning the tank (dump ice in the tank and
drive around) and used the new bacteria stuff. You have to reverse your dump
cycle, which means that we dump when we arrive as opposed to when we leave.
That has proven to be a bonus of avoiding the line as everyone dumps on the
way out. I use 4 ounces for the first treatment, then two ounces after that.

I've used it for 7 years and I think it works great. The longer the tank
sits, the better it gets. No odors, and it cleans the tank at the same time.
While my coach sat for 3 weeks while I was working on it, the holding tank
was full. When I dumped last week, the tank had no residue.

It goes by different names, just look for "live bacteria" on the bottle. I
get mine from KOA.

I do have to wonder what's in the Break-Up stuff. Thought maybe
an enzyme or something, but the bottle says:
A BIO-STATIC BLEND OF INGREDIENTS
NON-TOXIC
APPROVED for DUMPING
NO FORMALDEHYDE
NO ENZYMES
NO BACTERIA
NO PHOSPHATES
NO STAINING DYES
REMOVES STAINS
COMPLETE ODOR CONTROL IN ALL TEMPERATURES
DISSOLVES TISSUE
LIQUEFIES SOLIDS
PREVENTS BUILD-UP

I had to look up BIO-STATIC. It means:
"inhibits the growth or multiplication of an organism, especially of a microorganism"

I use septic tank cleaner from Wal Mart. Uses enzymes and works very well. This is not an RV product but in the household section. Very concentrated and no perfumes. Very effective.

Rid-X from Lowe's (among other places) works well.
I use "Always Fresh" available from some RV stores and on line. Best
stuff I ever tried.
It's about $20 for a butter tub sized container. Clean out the black
tank and use the Bacterial or enzyme product. Don't quite completely
empty the tank at the dump station, and it keeps on working. I add a half
scoop after dumping and never have a problem.
See what Phred Tinseth has to say in his "poop sheets":
http://www.phrannie.org/macerator.html
for the real poop on poop (and many other things)

RV waste systems depend on bacteria to decompose waste, including toilet paper and anything else that's biodegradable.

But there's bacteria -- and then there's bacteria.

"Aerobic" bacteria need oxygen (air) to live. These "good" bacteria decompose waste efficiently. Ideally, a tank with waste, water, and simple biodegradables will decompose into a thin slurry and will not smell. Ample air enters each time the toilet is used. If the vent pipe is properly placed through the top of the tank and isn't submerged so far down that it's blocked most of the time, and if the pipe isn't blocked elsewhere or at the roof, the system should work fine.

"Anaerobic" bacteria live without oxygen. They will also decompose waste, but in doing so produce various gases. Those gases also produce "STINK."

Obviously, the two types of bacteria can't coexist.

One will always displace the other. Proper venting helps keep the aerobic bacteria active, but there's more to it. Putting the wrong additives or chemicals in a tank may result in killing BOTH types of bacteria, then you really have problems. ...

Use what you want. I prefer "good" bacteria.

Anaerobic bacteria also produce methane gas as a by-product. How much depends on
the bacteria & the temperature. Aerobic sludge has an "earthy" smell but
requires a lot of aeration to be at maximum efficiency. Most municipalities use
either Aerobic treatment or a combination of both, using anaerobic as a second
stage to treat sludge from the aerobic stage. Smaller towns use mainly
anaerobic, since it costs less to do. If you'd like to see how it's done, I
encourage folks to contact their city & ask for a tour of the treatment plant.
The treatment plants in larger cities have their own labs to test the process
and for compliance to state standards. The Standards for wastewater treatment in
Texas are the most stringent in the US. I was a Class "B" Wastewater Treatment
Plant Operator at Tyler before my accident & retirement.
