After spending a few days playing, I mean diligently assessing, the new coach I think I have figured out a few of the problem areas.
The carb was loading up at cold idle and that turned out to be the choke pulloff needed a couple more turns of adjustment and the engine cleared up. So, I hope that issue is resolved for now.
The cruise control does not work and MikeT sent me some info from Jim Bounds. It has power at all the right places but when I checked the bellows it would not hold vacuum. Taking a good look at it, the rubber is deteriorated and perforated in spots. Hoping a new bellows will get that working again.
The step was at an odd angle and not useable. The PO had put an wooded extension on the step that hindered its movement. I removed that and the step folds and unfolds like it should. It is fine for entering the coach but really does not extend out far enough when egressing the coach. I see why the PO put the extension on. I have an idea that I will try.
I spent about an hour per wheel getting the oxidation off the Alcoas. Still have 3 to do but they look pretty good.
So, it is coming along and we are enjoying getting to know our coach. See you all in DuQuoin.

There have been recalls on Alcoa wheels. You might want to check if your wheels are included in one of them. Could save you some shining. (If they haven't already been checked.)

Wayne,
If you want a really good cruise control, cheaply, take a look at John
Sharpe's photo album describing the installation of a GM ElectroMotor cruise
control from a '90's vehicle:

Swartzendruber and I did similar installations at about the same time as
John; I think I can safely say that we're all extremely happy with our CC's,
and at a cost of around $100 each, including the cruise controller, the
switch(es), and the required Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
Even if you get the OEM CC working, it will not be as reliable nor as
consistent as the more modern CC, and it will not have the "tap up/down" and
resume features which we've all come to expect.

Hi gentlemen,
My husband, Keith's birthday is coming up and I would definitely like to
give him a gift of cruise control. The one listed below, GM ElectroMotor
cruise control, is it what you would recommend? I went to the link and the
title was listed as AC Delphi Elctro-Motor (electric). Is that the same
thing? We have a 1974 Palm Beach - 455 olds toronado engine.

Kim,
The CC is an ElectroMotor II cruise control, built by Delphi, and installed
on most GM vehicles built during the late 1980's and throughout most of the
1990's. It is NOT something you want to buy new -- the cost would be
exhorbitant. Most of those in junkyards are functional, and are so
plentiful that the cost is usually <$15. One needs to be sure to get the
"pigtail" (electrical connector and wires) to go with it.
But that's not the end of the story: To make it work, a Vehicle Speed
Sensor (VSS) is required; it's necessary to purchase that new. Those are
available from several vendors, but most of us have bought them through Ray
Swartzendruber for <$70.
Then, there's the matter of control switches: Those can be bought new at a
pretty reasonable price, but the wiring harness may not be readily
available, so the best option is to purchase both a switch and harnes from,
again, the junkyard -- not necessarily from the same vehicle as the CC. OR,
the option I chose is a <$15 2-channel remote control transmitter/receiver
combination off of eBay. The receiver mounts under the dash to do the
switching, and the transmitter (like a door lock remote control), sticks on
a steering wheel spoke.
If I sent this to HER (my all-important wife, therefore the CAPS), SHE'd get
a glazed look in HER eyes and hit DELETE. So would most other wives. I
hope it doesn't affect you that way, but don't feel badly if you decide to
choose another present rather than donning old jeans, gathering wrenches and
wire cutters, and heading to your favorite junkyard. :-)

Thanks for the link to John's album. I have been looking for that for a while. (I knew I had seen it... )
There is another album on a Junkyard CC by Spiffycar:

It looks like Spiffycar may have a cheaper solution to buying a new VSS.
Between the two albums, I think even I can figure it out.
Looking at the wiring diagram from and old Ford Contour, (The Contour is no long with us.) I am pretty sure the CC system could even come from a FORD!

Mike,
Thanks for the link -- I had not seen that. I figured there were VSS's out
there somewhere that we could use, but this is the first clue I've had. I
wish there was a little more explanation with them -- I don't understand the
references to "22" & "74", among other things.
Yes, I'm sure any CC which is independent of the car's central computer
could be used. But, with the many millions of the EM II out there at
bargain prices, and with their excellent performance, there's not much
incentive to go with anything else, IMHO.

Kim,
The easiest cruise control to install and works well is the Rostra that Duane Simmons sells. He has adapted everything for the GMC and gives good installation instructions. The last I heard, however, is that Duane is in the hospital and you may not be able to contact him. I installed one on my coach and it works well and easy to install. I think it cost $250 when I boutht mine a few years ago.

I don't understand the
references to "22" & "74", among other things.
Sorry i wasn't more clear on that on the photo site. I was making reference to the photo Illustrations of the sensors at the bottom of the page of the PDF file. Those two sensors which are the same (except for the adapter)will fit directly into the transmission in place of the original speedo drive and still allow you to retain the factory speedometer drive cable.
The buffer unit must be used to convert the signal of the sensor from an AC sine wave to a digital square wave for the cruise control to work with it.
It looks like Spiffycar may have a cheaper solution to buying a new VSS.
New vss =$70
Junk yard = "free"... as long as they don't strip search you!
Defiantly cheaper if you can find one as thy were only on two model years of cars.
Tried several others but no luck yet, except for a couple on some four banger Buick's & Fiero's. Those however have no provision for a speedo cable but can be used to supply the AC signal to the buffer.

If there is enough interest to warrant it I may be able to putt together some sort of DIY upgrade kit ( mainly a wire harness, some hardware,installation instructions & possibly the hard to find items ) for other owners to use.
Not trying to step on anyone else s toes or anything ,just it seems to come up from time to time. I know it would have saved me a great deal of time and late night internet research.

Being a typical cheep Dutchman, I still use the OEM cruise with good results. I did add the resume solenoid and adjusted the transducer to engage at about 2 mph above the set point. That way everytime I tap the button, it speeds up about 2 mph. For slowing down, I just hold the button.
