Since the part number was similar to the Hayden number I sort of assumed
it would be a Hayden in an Autozone box.
Nope.
"TORQFLO" embossed into the casting. "Made in China" inked onto it.
Lifetime Guarantee. I guess we'll see how it goes. I can get a real
Hayden if I need to...

I think specifications are the key as you say. We buy many components from China and if you have good and complete specifications, you well get what you ask for. The OEM's discovered that years ago. Much of the aftermarket industry is much much looser than that! (or should I say loser)
