Finally got around to working on this. When I took out the old inline fuse that had melted, I discovered that the end of the hot cable was frayed off (no burn marks, though). There was a LOT of corrosion there.
All I can see of this cable is about 5 ". Where does it come from? I guess I'll have to replace it. What size cable & how long? How do I go about replacing this?
This is for the house battery. Strange thing is that the little light in the generator compartment works even with the house battery disconnected. I am attached to shore power.
Guess I'm lucky I didn't have a fire. And also I'm at home and not on the road somewhere.

Before we can tell you where it goes youhave to tell us if it goes to
the + or the - post of the battery.

Your lights and other 12 v things will still work as long as you are
plugged in because your converter (battery charger) works from the 120
volt line to give you 12 volts to charge your battery and run your "
house" 12 volt items.

It's plugged into the ( + ) positive post of the battery. Now that I look closely at it, it's definitely burned off. Must have been quite an overload!

I would guess you had a poor electrical connection rather then an overload. I would think #10 or #12 stranded wire would be OK for a short run. I would make the necessary wiring corrections with good connections and turn on the pump. If it is an overload the fuse will blow and the wires will be ok.

10 or 12 gauge sounds way too small. That connector from the + terminal is designed to go to the circuit breaker located behind the battery compartment. When the boost switch is pushed and one tries to start the engine from the house battery it could draw 60 or more amps and would quickly burn up a 10 or 12 gauge wire.

Ernie - you should be able to determine the size of the original and use that size. It is likely a battery cable and would be a large wire size. Check where the other end is connected. It is probably to the side of the circuit breaker.

Ernie - is this the main battery cable going to the battery post or is it an additional wire?

I was thinking the wire with the fuse was going to his mascerator pump. If he is talking about the battery cable going from the 50 or 60 amp circuit breaker to the front of the coach that would definitely be around o or oo wire. I would agree that is another ball game.
