Yahoo!!! Gene and his wife Kathy made it to NY without significant issues. About 100 miles into the trip he lost the cruise control so I need to look into that and a few other things. He took good care of our coach and had to do a lot of little things to make the coach liveable and we appreciate them getting the systems tested and cleaned. The coach does have a lot of road grime that will take a lot of scrubbing tomorrow.
Now we go about making those little changes to make it our own.
Our basic ideas, in no particular order, are to add EFI (the exhaust is real black and sooty so that may be sooner rather than later), A Mac dash, replace the front bearings with the kit Jim K has using Ford sealed hubs and possibly the reactive braking system.
Looks like fun and I will be back often asking for help as I figure out GMC specific systems.

Check the ground on the CC unit itself. Unfortunately GM mounted the cc to the body and grounded it to the body. Ground ing it there the path back to the engine has to go through the engine to frame and body to frame ground straps. I have fixed a few of these by simply cleaning up the connection wire and moving it to the back of the engine where the master ground for the engine system is located.
There are many other things that could also fail but I would check that first.

Well, first assessment of the day. It needs a pass side boot for the CV joint. Who has those or is there a NAPA number? There are a lot of "Treasures" from the PO's so I have to sort through all of that although I did find a folder with a lot of receipts so I will try to recreate its pedigree and see if there is anything I need to know.
Lots and lots of wires to nowhere. There must be 5 or 6 switches that may have done something at one point in time but appear to just be filling holes in the dash now.
It really loaded up when I started it so I pulled the cover and backed the choke off just hair and it seemed to help but the grass is still blackened at the tailpipe. The 3 plugs I pulled all looked clean though.
I keep finding little storage spots and they all are packed with "stuff". We are going to completely empty the coach today including matress, cushions etc and clean everything. Last will be to clean the carpet.
Then we start on the mechanical issues, which the only significant one is the blackened exhaust. I kinda think that the ultimate solution is EFI. Miguel rebuilt the carb when he did the engine so I hope the short term fix has been taken care of with the choke. Have to drive it and see.
That's all for now, headed out with the wash bucket. Maybe I should first have a moment of silence for the 3000 or so bugs splattered all over the front, top and sides..... Ok, moment's over.

I'm certainly not against EFI, but what you describe is not normal for a carb either--there are several reasons a carb may be running rich and you may be able to correct that quite easily before making the next jump.

I Know the feeling. I bought a new Medeco high strength, high security lock
for my driveway gate. If I don't get this thing on the road soon, I'll
forget where I put the key for the darn lock!

Wayne,
I got my outer CV boots and double bands from Jim Bounds: http://www.gmccoop.com/index.htm But I'm sure any of the other vendors will have them, Jim K. Sirums, etc. I have paid more for certain items this way, but I really like to support our specialty vendors. That way they will still be there the next time I need something.
When I first got my coach two years ago it loaded up badly on cold start-up too. I backed off the choke so that it was barely closed (cold) and that problem was solved. Carburetor or EFI is a personal choice. There are lots of people that are very happy with a well set-up carb, myself included. You won't see any better fuel economy (if you can call it that) with EFI, but it probably does correct some drivability conditions if set up right. I sat through a seminar at GMCMI in Pueblo last year, that just about convinced me to go that way, but, for now, I am going to keep it simple.
Good luck with your new coach. It sounds like you are on the right track. We bought a good running coach and, after two years, I have it just about where I want it , with lots more upgrades on the list.

Unless you are entering the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, I believe everything but the Mac Dash is overkill, unless you just want to reduce your cash residual. I would think about a four bag suspension though, since the old bags could leave you stranded.
Lots of people here can help you get the carb right and save $2000. Of course it may get better mileage and start easier . . .

We had quite the busy day today. I managed to get all the road grime off the coach and the paint really shines so I feel much better about how it looks. Also managed to get it connected to ground power and switched the fridge over just as the propane tank went to empty.
I backed off the choke a little and the engine does not load as much. I think I will try just a little bit more tomorrow and that should be about as good as a carb can do.
Lisa decided to start cleaning the inside so that is shaping up also. The coach originally had a lounge set up in the back but the PO converted it to a fixed bed. The mattress is not something either of us would ever care to use. Once we had all of that out Lisa likes it a lot better with the lounge as it is more open. All the cushions are gone so we will have to see another coach to figure out the proper setup. For now we will put a nice clean mattress back in and look over options at the GMCMI convention.
Tomorrow it gets waxed and the Alcoas polished.

What I do on those chokes is loosen the three screws holding the bakelite
cover, don't need to take them all the way out. Make sure the engine is
cold, like overnight sitting, turn the bakelite cover until the choke plate
opens, then turn it back while watching the choke plate. Stop turning when
the choke plate just closes. This should get you a quick opening choke plate
if the vacuum pull-off canister is working, and no rich smokey exhaust.
These things all condense some kind of crud in the exhaust system from our
wonderful reformulated gasoline. Many of them puke some type of nasty black
stuff for the first several minutes after starting a cold engine. If that
quits after warmup, that's probably normal. It ain't good, but that is the
way it is.

Congrats on the "new" coach.
However, only 3000 bugs! This year I could get that many on a Barbie Star Traveler just by running to the end of our driveway and back.

Easiest way to remove the bugs is dryer sheets and warm water. They wipe right off.
