I haven't really started installing much radio gear into the coach yet.
When I use my Handheld in the driver's seat I get a lot of static from
my engine?

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how was it solved?

I plan to run HF from the coach as soon as I decide where to put the
screwdriver antenna.

Both the HEI and the Alternator can cause RFI. Could be either or both as
they are both in close proximity to the engine cover. If it sounds like a
whine or siren it is the alternator if it sounds like a rapid fire machine
gun then it is probably the HEI. There are some shielding modifications
possible similar to what we used in the days of generators which used
capacitors but I don't know the values involved. Sorry I can't be more
specific.

Look at www.magnecor.com for ignition noise suppressing spark plug wires.
You'll most likely have to call them to get the info for a GMC motorhome.
I haven't gotten that far along myself.

If you have a ladder on your coach, that might be a good possibility for
the screwdriver antenna. Good grounding is mandatory, though. If you can
get the bottom coil above the roofline, so much the better. Even one of
the "miniaturized" versions made by Tarheel or High Sierra will do better
that way than a bigger one mounted low.

On my GMC pickup, I have a High Sierra "full-sized" mounted ON the top
of the bumper. All of the antenna except the bottom 30" is above the
top of the pickkup's bed and it works quite well.

For a 2m/70cm dual-band antenna, the middle of the roof is ideal! Don't
listen to the jackassery about aluminum not being a good ground plane!

A few years back, Ford had a display at the Hamfest at Dayton. I picked up
an RFI info sheet.

They broke down two-way radios into low & high (over 100 watts) power
transmitters. I'll do some searching for it - but it is a few years old. I
do remember they said to run appropriate size wire for ground & power
directly from the power source, fuse both sides at the battery and to route
all wiring as far from factory wiring harnesses as possible. I have never
run HF mobile, but I had an Icom dual bander that would cut the
dash heat/air fan from high to low every time the mic was keyed. When going
off key the fan would return to high. Actually kind of neat. Never had a
complaint regarding signal quality.

That's what I remember.

If I do install HF, I may go with matching vintage equipment with tubes that
will help heat the coach or stress the AC even further! lol

Check to see if the underside of you engine cover still has the metal shield (plate) installed above the distributor.

Bob,

Would it help if you ran an external antenna off the HT?

Just a thought,

As far as installing a 2m/440 radio would you be the exclusive pilot or does
the radio have to be within reach of both cockpit seats - another thought...

Hi Tom--I'm not the original poster on this--my message was attached as a suggestion to check for the steel plate on the hatch cover. No problem, and hopefully the original poster will reply to your message Smile
