Hi All
I think I solved my vapor lock problem. I took out the inter fender
wells and removed one in line gas filter.
The fenders were easy to remove and easy to put back in.I'll let you if
it cured my prob.
As usual thanks too all for the ideas :-)

I currently have my liners out as I have been working on the coach, and absent of protecting the wood above when driving in rain, I cannot think of any reason to put them back. I may make some smaller ones, and I generally won't drive in the rain, which never happens here anyway...

I had mine liners out and had to drive in the rain and my engine started missing. So I needed to put them back in and redid my wires. I have not tried it since. WHen I got home there was a lot of water all over under the hatch so I would not run without them. I have been thinking of added vents to the liners like I have in the body.

I cannot think of any reason to put them back.

I think you gave the reason to restore them in your message.
The wood, no matter how well treated, will succomb to rot when it gets wet.
But what about this, what if the side to the engine were cut out so you have the fender well still to protect the area the tires sling the water from the street. Would help protect against splash as well.
One of my POs has already more or less, done this exact thing, I dont know if it were for cooling, ( probably ) or for access for an engine fire ( Less probable ) but a great chunk of the side of the fender is gone. The part that follows around the tire sling area for rocks and water is protected with what remains of the wheel well. Actually, when I think of it, it isn't that bad an idea.
LarC ( Knock on the big old tree in the back yard --- have not had vapour lock yet, maybe there was a reason. However, my GMC is more or less, STOCK, no major mods like headers, manifolds etc that would contribute to heat addition under the hood. )

When I bought my coach some 6 years ago the PO had already removed the liners and I never put them back in and have never had problem with vapor lock problems. I live right in the middle of the San Joaquin valley and rain is not an issue even though trips to the central coast and the Sierra Nevada's expose me to that rare phenomenon. Here in California we have had the ethanol blend for many years but I always keep the tanks full to help with moisture absorption.

As the sock filters load up with the dirt and gum from the fuel and tank,
the socks restricts the flow.
When the forward pump starts pulling on the fuel, air bubble forms and
manages to get to the pump.
We take an air hose to the supply hoses at the tank and back flush the
socks.
We then remove the selector and mount it to the outside of the frame and
drill 2 holes for the supply line to join the selector.
We then have the fuel flow through a large low restriction filter cartridge
to the Vain driven electric pump along with the bypass valve.
New the fuel has lesser chance of developing the air column in the line.
With the bypass valve around the pump, one does not need to run the aux.
pump all the time.
I have been running it this way since 1982 with great results and have sold
hundreds of these kits wit great feed back.
There are other things that can help; Exhaust shields for the fuel tanks,

I live just North of John, in the valley. Just took "Baby" and our current coach to the mountains last Thursday. It was not a cool, kind day. The trip was about 55 miles and we ended up above 4K feet. Of course the fuel is 10% and Baby has the old Q-Jet. The trans was starting to get warm, in the early yellow, the fan clutch was engaging from time to time and no vapor lock. Wheel liners are in. It does have nice side vents to the outside. It doesn't have an electric fuel pump. Selector is on the inside of the frame. Fuel filter is a ho-hum regular filter. It does have heat shields on the 3" exhaust.
Man, I wish we could figure out an absolute "key" to this summer unhappiness.

Any thoughts as to the venturi effect of the fender wells and whether or not they help channel cooling air past the engine as a baffle of sorts?

Steve,
No effect whatsoever!
However, I haven't left the Coop yet! ;-)
Getting close though!
Not to worry I will provide info to the GMC net.

So Rob, how did the elephant ears and spoiler affect your engine cooling?

Thanks Rob. Are you on Jim's payroll yet or just making certain he makes a profit this month?
I also recently added the ears and JRs spoiler, but I never tested them. I look forward hearing what you find.
Just a word to the wise. I recently had to have my GMC towed from the front with both front wheels cradled. The driver was really good about not hitting the spoiler when he first hoisted it and for 30 miles of towing. Unfortunately he trashed the spoiler putting the rig back on the ground. His only response was "I guess I should have let you take it off first like you wanted to".

And others hold the driver personally responsible -- but don't expect him to
tell you that.
